Novice Owner - Adult vs. Puppy Hello, I am new to this forum and apologize if this question has been posted before. I have never owned a dog and am considering a yorkie. I've done quite a bit of research, but am wondering as a novice owner, is it better to adopt an adult yorkie, or a puppy? I would think with an adult, its personality would already be formed, and easier for a new owner if it is well trained. Any thoughts or advice? Thanks in advance. |
I don't think you could go wrong with a yorkie puppy or adult:) It all depends on what 'you' want. Puppies are a LOT of work - vet visits for immunizations and spay/neuter, housebreaking, training, etc. On the other hand, you could get an adult with medical problems and/or bad habits. Which ever one you choose you will get lots of love and joy out of - best of luck and don't forget to post pics:) |

So glad you chose a Yorkie for your first dog, you will be so completely happy you did! As for your question about adult/puppy - I recently brought home a Yorkie pup, Mango. I have an adult, Spanky already. I have to say, that after 7 weeks of absolute joy in watching this little baby grow, play, do her demented little puppy antics, I would not have missed it for the world!!! My husband says she was worth every penny - no amount of money could have provided the hilarious entertainment we have had with our little Mango. Also, because I could spend the time, being a stay at home Mom, I could devote the energy to toilet training her the way I wanted. After 6 weeks, I would say she was 90% "potty Safe", in that I could let her roam around the house, and be confident she would go out through her little doggie door, into the dog run. She has not had an accident in the house for over 2 weeks now, my sweet little angel. Puppyhood brings such unbelievable joy to the Yorkie Mommy, watching every one of the adorable stages they go through. |
It all depends if you have the time to potty train it and such. for my next dog I think I am going to get an adult one because although it was fun and definitely worth it to raise a puppy to an adult, it took a lot of time and i dont think i will have any time after i graduate when i look for a job.. |
