Coccidia!!!! I was just petting a puppy at my work that someone had brought. After I've been playing with him for like 10 minutes the lady is like oh yea he has coccidia!!! So I ran to the bathroom and washed my hands. I don't wnt my babies catching it from smelling him on me. I know it's contagious but how? Can my babies get it because I was playing with this pup??!! |
hope this helps Where do Coccidia Come From? Oocysts (pronounced o'o-sists), like those shown above, are passed in stool. In the outside world, the oocysts begin to mature or “sporulate.” After they have adequately matured, they become infective to any host (dog or cat) that accidentally swallows them. To be more precise, coccidia come from fecal-contaminated ground. They are swallowed when a pet grooms/licks the dirt off itself. In some cases, sporulated oocysts are swallowed by mice and the host is infected when it eats the mouse. Coccidia infection is especially common in young animals housed in groups (in shelters, rescue areas, kennels, etc.) This is a common parasite and is not necessarily a sign of poor husbandry. Can People or Other Pets Become Infected? While there are species of coccidia that can infect people (Toxoplasma and Cryptosporidium, for example), the Isospora species of dogs and cats are not infective to people. Other pets may become infected from exposure to infected fecal matter but it is important to note that this is usually an infection of the young (i.e. the immature immune system tends to let the coccidia infection reach large numbers where the mature immune system probably will not.) In most cases, the infected new puppy or kitten does not infect the resident adult animal. |
This lady should have warned you before she let you pet her dog. I think that was kinda rude of her to not tell you her dog is contagious she is putting your dog and any other dog you might come into contact with in danger of getting it too. |
You should be O.K. I believe it is only carried though the Poop of the animal.Check your clothes for it ect. I would change clothes when you get home. |
I thought it was only transmitted through poop but wanted to make sure. This stupid co-worker KNOWS that I have 2 dogs, 1 of which is a puppy 6 months old. Stupid lady. I just figured she didn't realy know the seriousness of the infection. I immediately stopped playing with him and ran and washed my hands  Yes, I am a paranoid momma. |
She should've told you before you petted the puppy! I don't know anything about coccidia, but I hope that you don't bring it to your babies :( |

I just went to a bunch of websites that say it's only passed through fecal matter of the carrier :animal36 So I think I'm safe.I washed up a million times already and I checked a bunch of sites just to be certain and I will call the vet on my way home..lol |
intestinal parasites are only passed on thru the poop so unless you got poop on your hands and then let your puppies lick it off there is no way for them to get it :) have no fear |
Cali had it when I got her really bad and Maya my Pom never caught it and they were always together. So you should be safe. |
