HELP! Going on vacation..will she be okay? I am leaving to go on an unexpected trip out of the country and I am having to leave my 14 week old pup behind. I will be taking her to my mother's home where I know she will be well taken care of. But I am so nervous that she will one, not remember me when I get back (I will be gone for a week) since I have only had her for 5 weeks and two, that the sudden change in her schedule will make her crazy and will set us back in housetraining, etc. Does anyone have any suggested how to make this transition good for the both of us? |
At 4 months of age I left Gypsy Rose (now 15 months) for a week with trusted dog carers (they'd cared for my elderly dog many times, sadly he's no longer with us) and I had the same worries as you but I think you'll be amazed and it won't make much difference - honestly! I now have another yorkie pup, 16 wks and am also doing the same thing exactly now, of course she'll have Gypsy Rose her big sis but it still worries me - only natural for us to worry isn't it? You'll be able to phone your mother and see how she's getting on etc. You'll worry more than your pup will, so enjoy your holiday!! |
Thank you thank you thank you! I can't tell you what a relief that is to hear it from someone who did the same thing!! It is so nice to have this forum. Now, I can concentrate on all the other things to worry about with my pup! :) I wonder if owners of big dogs worry this much or is it that Yorkies are so small and fragile? |
I have owned many dogs in my life and have never worried about leaving them at "sleep-away camp" as we call boarding facilities. Would I leave Higgins? NO WAY!!! Now, I WOULD leave him with my son. They have a little Chihuahua and we have taken care of her while they were away. If I had to go somewhere where I could not take Higgins, I know he would have a GREAT time at my son's. When my son and his bride were on their honeymoon for two weeks in September, we kept Princess. She sure didn't forget them!!! She was OVERJOYED to see them when they came home. HOWEVER, when they took her home, she went into a 3-4 day depression missing HIGGINS! They are coming to visit us this weekend and the dogs will be so THRILLED to see each other.....so cute to see. We have made arrangements with our son that if anything should happen to us, they will take Higgins, and likewise, if anything happens to them, we will take Princess. I predict your Yorkie baby will have a WONDERFUL time at Grandma's house. Grandmas are great at spoiling little ones. It may set her housetraining back a little.....OR.....it may speed it up......Grandmas are great trainers! Enjoy your vacation and try not to worry! :D |
She won't forget you. How can a Yorkie forget a wonderful Mommy and someone that loves her so much? She'll have a ball at Grandma's, just check in with her once in a while, and you can also 'talk' to your baby, just have Grandma put the telephone earpiece near her ear and babble good stuff. :) |
Your baby will probably fare much better than you! :) Although, we have never had to leave Toto ... I would be sure and take "familiar" things to leave with her! I have found, they really like their own "stuff"!! ;) Have a great trip!! :D |
Same thing happened to me when I got the boys. We had them about 3 months when I went away for 2 weeks! They stayed home with my hubby so they weren't away from things that they were familiar with. He brought them to the airport to pick me up and they just licked me up. So be comfortable with knowing that they will have a good time at Gramma's...Theresa & The Boys |
