Yorkie Bite??? I need help. Our 1 year old male yorkie is usually a pleasure. Last night he was not. Took him out for a walk in the yard. Another neighbor had his dog for a walk by our house. We walked towards each other and the dogs were excited. No barking or growling. As they got withing 2 feet my Yorkie started to get very excited. and let aout a growl. I pulled him away 3-4 feet and was attempting to to put my hand under him to pick him up and he growled and bit my finger. Broke the skin. Not real bad but a bite is a bite. I have 3 kids and my wife always said biting is totally unacceptable. In the past he has never done this but has growled a few times when a lot of kids were gathering around the dog and getting close to his face. I need help to get this totally under control. All suggestions and advice welcome. Dennis |
I am not an expert, and I am sure that others will definately give you some great advice, but I think that type of behavior is 'fear bitting'??? I have 2 Yorkies and this happens in my house as well. They get sooooooooooooo caught up in the barking and/or protection and 'unknown', also stress and anxiety, that they will bite or nip. I don't even know if they realize they do it or if 'fear biting' just happens. Again, others who know the answer will help out here... I think we just have to use positive training techniques to slowly get them to not do this. Plus, too much excitement for them can be scarey, meaning other strange dogs and even kids, these all have to be introduced slowly and properly so that we can curb the 'fear biting' |
I suggest getting the Dog Whisperers DVD. He will teach you how to make yurself the pack leader. If you dog bit you he does not view you as the leader as a dog would NEVER it the pack leader. One you have established yourself as leader of the pack, a whole world of issues will be resolved. |
Thank you for the help. Yes thats what I thought too. He really just growled and nipped me, not a full bite. I need some advise as to how to stop this behavior. Thank you. |
Which Dog Whisperer CD should I get. I saw many types. Vol 1 Vol2, Season 1 Season 2 ??? Thank you for the input. I agree with you. Dennis |
Here is a good post that might help to get you started. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71005 Whether it was a nip or a bite, it did break the skin and fo the law it would be considered a bite. If your dog trusts you as the pack leader he will trust you to handle other dogs. |
I have to agree with the others you need to establish yourself as the Alpha. |
