Puppies How many puppies does a Yorkie usually have? I got Sadie, and she will be three in July. Her breeder retired her as she had a rough time with her last pregnancy. With her first litter, she had four pups. Her second litter was in January and she had five, and the breeder said she had a real rough time. I am thinking that 4 and 5 puppies is alot for a 5 and a half pound Yorkie. Any advice? Thanks. Kate |
I'm a wannabe breeder with very little Yorkie experience but if the pups were like 3 1/2 oz, I wouldn't think 5 would be too many. I have heard of Yorkies having 8 pups. I couldn't begin to say if they all lived or how big they or their parents were. But in general with Yorkies, I'd say the usual litter size is 3. Sylvia |
In Bunny's litter there were three pups and Dad was 3.5 and Mom 5.5 My breeder told me of a litter she had once with different sire and dam, but this Yorkie gave birth to SEVEN puppies! Every single one of them lived and they were all healthy! I can't remember the names of sire & dam, but she told me how she couldnt believe it at the time, but was able to place companion quality in homes and finished two as champs. |
Wow, 2 show dogs out of 7. Did they keep those parents? It might never happen again but I would have kept them both. Sylvia |
