Eye Grooming How do you clip the hair around your dog's eyes, and what do you use? Thanks. Kate |
I Have the same question. I have try using scissors but i get so scare because Gucci gets terrified when she sees them and bites them. Im scare to cut her. Any suggestions are very appreciated. :) |
Try with some scissors they kids in elementary school use for school projects, i.e. the non sharp ones without pointy ends. At first, we found it best to have one person gently soothe Yoda and hold his body and rub him while the other slowly cuts the area around the eyes. It can be done, you just need a lot of patience as they will fuss and squirm and fight you all the way. :p We don't know how one person can do the job when you have a young Yorkie that hasn't had a cut around the eyes! Now Yoda lets Mommy cut the area around his eyes without help from me... |
I wait till she is sleepy. They sell baby safety scissors for cutting babies nails at drugstores. They have a rounded end. I think they may even sell them at dollar stores. |
Great idea. Thanks. Kate Quote:

Well, just having got my first Yorkie last June and not having any personal experience with them, I'm ashamed to say I took the clippers and shaved from between their eyes down the top of their muzzles to their noses. I used the little battery run clippers and have since learned better. Not even the groomers said anything, I guess they thot I knew what I was doing. I use the little clippers to trim the hair around their eyes now but not all the way down their muzzles. They look kind of shaggy there but it'll grow, then no one will know the mistake I made by looking. Sylvia |
We use little battery clippers on Duncan around his face it feels safer than even blunt ended scissors. |
2 Attachment(s) I use a small 1/4" Wahl Battery Trimmer - My girls both hold still for it - I've posted this pic of Chanel for other people - but this is how I trim her eyes and it's really worked for us |
Villette, thanks for showing that trimmer! Here's a dumb question, but do you aim the trimmer up towards the top of the head or dowm toward the nose? Bo got the cutest little summer cut and the groomer did a great job between his eyes this time. But I know it's gonna need maintaining between grooming. And I know I've said this many times but your girls are just beautiful!!! |

I go in the direction of the hair - if you try to go across or against it it chunks - I try to use a light touch and skim in the direction the hair grows and it's really easy to maintain....I usually have them in my lap -or on a grooming table I rigged - sometimes they act better on a higher place...but hold on to him ! |
2 Attachment(s) I forgot the link - I had a hard time finding these locally - I did find a good trimmer in a Sally's Beauty Supply - but here's another version of the Wahl and the website - http://www.wahl-store.com These are in the MENS personal Trimmers I also use a Wahl with an INCH head on it similar to the pic - they DO sell these in Targets etc |
I myself gently pull the outside corner of the eye which closes it and make a couple small snips at a time. Have tried many different ways but Gizmo seems to put up with this. Poor baby..what we will do for beauty. Yes, I'm covered in a cold sweat by the time I'm thru but he looks and feels much better. |
There's also something sold that is very silent - it's called a personal trimmer for women who want hair on their face gone ? I got one at Sally's Beauty Supply and it's so quiet - I had forgot to add that when I posted the other day - |
Thanks sooo much for the tips Villette!! I will definately look for the trimmer you described. I'll come in handy between groomings! |
