Question for our UK members. I was watching the Toy breed showing at Crufts last night. Osman Sameja's Yorkie had a docked tail..now I am totally confused. I saw other English dogs with cropped ears and docked tails. ..the Silky Terrier was docked also. They wereowned by English breeders..I realize alot of the enteries at Crufts are from other countries, but these were not.??? AND...the Austrailan Terrier was a golden red..gorgeous..I have only seen them in black and tan. |
I have no answer for you but I have watched this show for days and have always missed the toy breed section. Although that little Chihuahua is so cute, I can't belive she didn't win! I'm dying to see the yorkies shown. I hope animal planet shows some more dog shows, it's really great. |
Hi Pat!! It's not that we don't dock here, just that many do not if that makes sense? The breeder is no longer allowed to dock, it muat be carried out by a vet but how that is actually enforced I can't imagine? Many here in the UK are against the docking of tails but you still see pet yorkies and show yorkies who are. Ana xx :aimeeyork ps I think you know that our girls are undocked? |
Because crufts is open to other countries docked dogs are still allowed to be shown (we are are working on changing their minds about this as it is illegal to dock routinely here it seems crazy to give medals to docked dogs) Sadly some breeders still dock by convincing vets that they need to do so for health reasons. I think some breeders are finding not cropping hard because the tails their dogs are producing are very poor - traditionally docked breeds have never been breed for good tail conformation and it's easier to cut them off then work on the breed to produce a decent tail ! Cropped dogs are not allowed to be shown at Kennel club events in fact I can't think of one show at which they would be shown as this has been illegal here for ages and is almost universally thought of as cruel. |
docked? Do any of you have an un-docked yorkie? Would you post a picture? I've never seen what they look like au-natural. |
I have unfortunately no piccies of him with his tail - but if you look here the anti-docking alliance have some good pictures. |
Huh! I'll be darned. I have NEVER seen one like that in the states...or even a picture. If I had had the option...I don't think I would have docked Syd...but she had it done at only a few weeks old. |
tail Thank you Julie, Ana..but the Ozmillion Yorkie that was shown by the breeder IS English...that is what confused me. Vets can dock if it is for a medical reason, that I understand...do you think breeders come up with reasons to get the tail docked..I know some imports to the US with tails are being put through docking in adulthood..which I am totally against. I have no problem leaving a natural tail, but everyone has to do it... |
Yes people make excuses and some unscrupulous vets will still dock. |
Docking is NOT illegal here - I am almost certain of this!! Unless things have changed dramatically recently! It's as I said - breeders must not do it but vets can. It is frowned upon though now. Ana xx  |
It is illegal for a lay person to dock a dog in UK and vets are only allowed to do it if it is for medical reasons which should mean very few puppies being routinely docked. The spirit of the law is that it is illegal. |
