Top knot a snarled mess? So my puppy is 6 months old - and we don't have a lot of experience with the top knot, but, her hair seems to snarl at the area of the elastic band. Is this because she is still in her puppy coat? Every time I remove the band I have to carefully comb out the mess and hair is being removed during the process. Is this normal:confused: ? I have tried the scrunchies but they don't stay at all. |
I have the same problem with Hope. I found the fabric covered, tiny bands, at Walmart in the baby department, they seem to help alot! she doesnt seem to get as tangled with these... d |
Thanks - I think I have some of those for my daughter, I will give them a try. I am also going to see if her bows with barrettes attached will stay in as well with less mess. |
I have the same problem with both my 6 year old, and my 9 month old yorkies. On my 6 year old, I have to comb his top knot out with cowboy magic. That does get the tangles out. Think next time I'm in Walmart, I will look for the fabric covered ones. I know scrunchies didn't work for me either as my 9 month old makes a mess of her top knot in 1 hour or less. |
Another idea is to get the bows with barrette in them. Put your puppies hair up with the rubber band. Put the bow in by slipping it between the hair and the band. when it comes time to remove the band, simply snip the band. Be careful not to snip any hair when you do. This avoids pulling or ripping the hair. |
I use the latex bands I found at Claire's Boutique. They stay in good. I wrap them three times. In the evening I just snip them out with a scissors rather than try to unwind them. Put the tip of the scissors under the hair band and pull outward to assure no hair gets snipped and cut the band. Really works great. |
I always CUT the latex bands off rather than trying to take them out! Bands are not that expensive and cutting saves the hair. I also use the cowboy magic to get any mats out! AND lots of patience in separating the mat so as not to lose the length.:) |
You take the bands out every evening? I was leaving them in for 3 to 4 days - is that wrong? I would cut the bands out but the hair is knotted - like a really small cotton ball. The barrettes on their own don't work by themselves, they slip right out. Today she is just sporting the hair loose but I can't see her eyes through all the hair. Do older dogs have this same problem - or is it a puppy thing? |
you leaving the in to long most of the timei cut brownies out also i take his hair out every night |
Hair bands should never stay in that long. I do Sammy's topknot in the morning so she doesn't get her hair in her breakfast. I'm new to topknots, since Loki has never had one, but I've found that the latex bands are OK if you cut them out, but I also like the "ouchless" bands if I'm adding a barrette. The Scunci (sp?) covered elastic bands are great if I don't want to add a bow or barrette. Those stay in for most of the day and slide right out. And it makes sense since I have used the large size for my OWN hair for years, so I know they work! I take the topknot out every night - if she hasn't already ripped it out! If she still needs to see I will just slip in a plastic baby barrette. Loki seems to think that "eat Sammy's barrette" is a new game, so we tend to stick to bands. But I like the pressure barrettes with bows the best. |
1 Attachment(s) Wow - I had no idea I should take them out daily! That will probably help a lot. I am learning so much. It's just such a chore to get them in once - that I don't look forward to doing it daily. I bet that will fix it though. |

Looks like you have 3 top knots to do morkie4 - you do your Maltese each day as well? I was thinking a Maltese will be our next addition - after I get to be a pro at top knots! |
I found a bag of 100 tiny bands at the Dollar Store, for you guessed it, a $1. They are real small and are covered in a chenille (sp) fabric. You can stretch them out very easy. I wrap them about three times around the top knot and they stay all day and they slide right out. The bag contained red, white, pink, and black. Don't tell Toto, but he is sporting a pink band today! ;) (Wouldn't want him to get a complex or something.) I usually put his top knot up twice a day. They really do stay in good and we have no hair breakage. |
Looks like I have some shopping to do!;) |
