OK, so we've been chatting about the unreasonable rash of Yorkie theft recently - which prompted my firm decision NOT to be so free with Abigail when we're out. You know...letting folks pet her, and pick her up. I made my mind up just to tell people "I'm sorry, I'd hate for her to bite you"; which isn't a lie at all...I would hate for her to nip anyone! It's just sort of unlikely that she'd actually bite them before she licked them to death :p .

So, anyway, it was such a gorgeous day here in VA yesterday, we (daughter's care assistant, my sister and I) took Hannah to town and I took Abbie along with us. Well, allllllllllll my well-seated resolve just dissolved at the first "aaawwww...look at the cute doggie!" squeal. *sigh* One seemingly very nice elderly gentleman knelt down beside us at an outdoor cafe' for quite some time. During this time, I found Abigail's leash UNhooked!!! Now, it was probably a fluke accident; but, dadgummit I couldn't help thinking that "nice l'il ol' man" did it - just for, well whatever people might do something like that! I hate feeling this way about folks, and I know it's because of the recent thefts.

Hope you had a nice trip to town~ Goodness I would hate to think the elderly gentleman had a hidden agenda for your baby. We all need to be very careful with our babies.

Wow! It's hard to believe, but you can't be to careful! The leash couldn't come undone by itself, what other explanation could there be?

Carry something legal that you can use in defense, and make sure the leash is very secure around your wrist. Wear good sneakers that have some "kick" to them, and running power! Two men came upon an elderly lady here who was walking her precious Yorkie baby when they just took the leash from her, picked up the dog and ran.

Honestly, I really thought I was being overly cautious. I had heard about small dogs and pets being stolen, but I really didn't know it was this bad. Since Percy came home, I am obsessive about locking the doors and windows when I leave. I won't let him outside without a leash, and am almost afraid to take him to the dog park. That someone will just pick him up and take him when I turn my back.

Why would someone steal someones pet? :confused: It doesn't make any sense to me.

Crazy HUH I have a 3 karat diamond ring .,,, I have had for 18 years and I wear it everyday out in public.,,,, but I do not take my Yorkie out,,,,, I have had one stolen and will not let it happen again.,,,
None of my neighbors have any idea I have gotten a new puppy and they won't if I can help it.... I live in a very very nice neighborhood and as far as I know have good neighbors, ( we have only lived here 6 months ) so I am not taking any chances.,, Friends or family of one of my neighbors took my 2 year old baby 2 months ago..,

Wow, these are all such horrible stories! I've been pretty paranoid about taking Ferdinand to the dockpark lately also with all the thefts. It's just so horrible that there are people out there that would steal someone's pet. :(

ALL very good suggestions; however - my knees are toooooo old and decreppit to run after anything! lol The leash was unHOOKED from her vest, and I only noticed because the tension went slack! Had she decided to run into the street .... oh my... I can't think of it!! Orrrrrr, had someone just come along and picked her up when I was chatting with my companions! oy oy oy!!

This is just madness, this sudden obssession with the breed! Don't people realize they ARE pets, and not just trinkets to be stolen? When a pet is stolen, they go through traumatic separation anxiety!!

These kinds of things always happen to the breed/s that are the most popular and sellable. A lot of it has to do with stealing and selling for more drugs. Drugs make peoples minds like jello. They do not think about anything but the durg and will do ANYTHING to get it.
