Wednesday one of our patients was a 8 month old chihuahua with a fractured front leg. She was on hold most of the day because the ower couldn't get any money together. Well towards the end of the day the owner still couldn't get any money and we're thinking about just euthanizing her because they couldn't afford to take care of her.
(Background info on the owners and the dog: They are from Mexico and got the dog in mexico. We're not so sure how long they've been here but they only took it to the vet because she broke her leg. they havent been at any other time so her health care isn't up to par. And they live in a not so nice area because they don't have much money. Bottom line, they shouldn't have gotten a dog in the first place.)
So i had been carrying the dog around all day because we were really slow and she is just tooo cute. The vet got off the phone with the owners and told us this and i just blurted out 'I'll take her!!!!" without even thinking about the parental units i still live with. I told the vet i'd talk to myparents wheni got home about her.
So the parents were a total no when i first asked them. and i weedled them down to letting me take her home and recover her from the surgery which would be about two months or more. So i'm hoping that they will fall in love with her and just let me keep her. If not I have to find her a new home. Anything would be better then going back to a family who can't afford her care or being put to sleep.
Yesterday morning i told this to the vet and he had the owners come down and sign her over instead of euthanizing her. They know she's going home with someone else. After she was signed over we took new x-rays and it turns out that the fracture is a really old one. She must have broken her leg a couple months ago and since they couldn't afford to do anything they just splinted her leg and hoped it would heal. It was healing alittle but then something happened and she re injured it. So the scar tissue that was forming around the broken bone was broken again. SO we have a bad fracture to begin with and now we have an old fracture will dull bone fragments and lots of scar tissue. *sigh* The doc went into surgeyr on her last night and fixed it the best he could and then took x-rays again. After consultation with an older vet they decided to go back in and revise it this morning. Her bones are just so small and fragile so it was very tough to do. Not to mention her vitals were so bad at first during the surgery, scared me to death. But now she's fine.
I left the hospital at 5 and she was waking up from surgery with a new fixed leg and a pretty pink bandage. I'm going to take her home tomorrow morning after the surgeon calls me. i cant wait. i have everything all set up for her.
So hopefully i'll be able to keep her after the 2 months, but if not she'll be needing a really good home that can take care of her. :D |
