Need Help with Potty Training! Spicy (15 weeks) is making HUGE messes while we are gone during the day. I put him in a bathrrom--where his crate is but not locked in the crate. At least once a week we come home to poop everywhere. He goes off the potty pad and then tracks it like you can not believe. He eats Science Diet right in the afternoons and poops twice in the mornings before we leave for school (I teach). Still he goes what looks like once during the day but then gets it absolutely EVERYWHERE. Today took well over 2 hours to clean. I'm thinking I will crate him tomorrow...hate to...but.... He pees in his crate sometimes so I suspect he'll do that while we are gone but that has to be better than this mess. ANY idea or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. We are now just starting to work on training him to go outside rather than the potty pads. He's never been consistent with them and I think he'll understand better that he only goes outside that trying to distinguish the pads from any other carpeted are. Thank you for readiny my long vent. We LOVE Spicy but man we need some help with this one. |
pen You will never regret investing in a puppy pen with lid...one with a grate is excellent...size should be at least 2x3...makes life happy for all. |
what is the difference between a pen and a crate? |
At 15 weeks their still a baby, so good luck. Max is 20 weeks & he still goes 40% where ever he feels. I am at home so I can watch him & keep him in a smaller area of the house. If I didn't watch him he'd go where ever. He does go on the potty pads, but sometimes it's on the carpet. I think they are confused between potty paper & carpet when they are younger. My girls go completely on the potty paper. Once a week coming home to a mess isn't to bad. I'd just keep doing what your doing. Or an xpen. I wouldn't want to be locked in a crate all day while your at work. That to me is a long time. Every one is different, but I confine mine to the kitchen when I'm gone. It's tiled, they can eat ,sleep, run around the island. Plenty of room, yet they can't hurt themselves. I came home today with a pee pad all chewed up, & a small poo in the corner left by Max. Love my babies, what can I say. |
First off Science Diet is not a good dog food at all! Second, I can't believe you would rather have your little puppy poop and pee and lay in it rather than clean the floor. No puppy should be left for long periods of time. Sounds like you should have someone come over several times a day to let your puppy outside and to play with him. |
Actually, I'd rather him not play in poop. |

If you possibly can - is there someone to come let him out during the day maybe ? He's still a baby but if he's always by himself during the day - training will be harder for you in the long run....Good luck - Yorkies aren't the easiest dogs to train but just try to remember ...his small size comes into play also....they can't 'hold it' like bigger dogs can |
My husband's office is in the house so he is in and out during the day and that helps. I have been talking with the breeder- she is just wonderful and offered some suggestions I will try as well. We'll get this figured out--I will also look into the Xpens. I have read about them some on here but haven't dug any deeper into it. Thank you for your replies. :) |
