Eeeek! 2 sets of teeth! Last night when I was brushing Sydney's teeth I noticed something very strange. It appears that her baby teeth are not falling out and the adult teeth are coming in right behind them. In the front top (about 6 teeth) she has a double set and she also has a double set of the lower pointy teeth. Am I going to have to have these pulled...or can she just have 2 sets? They don't seem to be bothering her...but boy does it look freeky. This has to have happened REALLY recently b/c I'm in her mouth brushing all the time and I've never noticed this before. Plus she was just at the vet last week for her spaying...you would think that they would have noticed since they had to put a tube in. Anybody have any advice? I'm afraid that if I ask the vet they will tell me that I have to have them pulled regardless...and I really don't want to put her through that if I don't have to. |
I'd look in the health section or do a search, Im sure there are a lot of threads on this topic. This is very common in Yorkies and other small breeds. Their baby teeth don't always fall out naturally so sometines you have to get them pulled. Ranger had two sets for a while, but they fell out mostly during play (tug of war). We were waiting to see if they would all fall out or not and if not then have them pulled when he gets neutered. |
If they don't fall , you'll have to have them pulled out . It can cause big troubles later . Gioia have had the same things . I used to call her my " little Shark ". I have her pulled out by the vet . |

It is quite common and this is one reason a lot of vets and yorkie owners put off spaying or neutering until the dog's adult teeth come in in case any baby terth need pulling, they can do it at the same time. How old is Sydney? I am surprised your vet didn't mention this. There are things you can do to encourage or help the teeth fall out including certain foods and play toys designed for teething. My daughter's 8 month old had a double row and he hasn't been neutered yet, but most of the baby teeth have now fallen out so the vet will only have to pull a few when he goes under anesthesia. |

Hmmm I am guessing that the vet didn't notice b/c I think that the adult teeth just broke the surface in the past week since she was spade. I have been holding her in a different way (facing away from me instead of toward me) to brush her teeth each night since her surgery so as not to bump the stitches...but now she is all better...so I went back to the normal way and that's when I noticed. Of course it would be just my luck that this would happen right after her surgery. LOL. Hopefully they will fall out on their own. |
From what I've read, if you don't remove the baby teeth, it is easier for food to get caught between the two sets of teeth and it will cause tooth problems in the future. It also starts to smell pretty bad. Bentley had the same thing and we got them all removed when he was neutered |
Jasmine had 8 k-9 teeth we just recently had 4 pulled they said if we didnt pull them she could get gum disase and it will cause lots of problems when she is older so when they spayed her they pulled 4 teeth and the vet gave them to me for the tooth fairy lol |
vet Vets tick me off sometimes...you are paying good money for good care..any first year vet knows you should wait or check the teeth and pull the baby ones at the time of spaying/neutering...now the vet will charge for another surgery... |
my IKO is 9 months old and has the same thing. I did not notice either. The groomer had a fit, and told me he could get a infection and die. I freaked out took him to the vet immediately. He laughed. said he is ok. is getting teeth removed today. He is only 2.10oz. I am nervous. |
My 9 month old Iko is getting teeth pulled today. and they did not mention nutering.? You are so right. |
My pup had the same problem when I took her to be spayed they removed the baby teeth otherwise they would rott in her mouth. |
Mine vet as well .He is getting his teeth removed as we speak. |
My 10 month old has a couple doubles going on too. I'm not neutering him so I'm hoping they fall out on their own! I'm giving it a few more months. :) |
