Shaving Ears Okay....I have decided one last time to try to get my baby's ears to stand up. I only tried once, and I didn't shave the ears and I used a really sticky tape and it almost broke my heart to get the tape off their ears. I know how to do the taping, but what I don't understand is how much of the hair on the ear should be shaved? How far down do you shave the hair on the back of the ear? Do you shave the tan hair on the front of the ear that grows all around the edges of the ear? What about all that hair that is down low on the front of the ear? |
When I did it,, I would trim all the Hair on the edges with scissors, then take one of those (micro-personal trimmers) those little ones that are 9-10 dollars at drug store or walmart, and I would trim about half way down the outside of the ear,, Bailey never had much hair inside.. Also I think the massaging helped, I would massage his ears all the time,, Something worked,,, they are UP!! Either the hair cutting,, or the massaging ... or they just went up on their own,,,who knows!! |
Oh I feel for you, I did that forever! How old is your puppy? Sometimes if they are being really stubborn you can try shaving all the hair off the ear I guess, but you are really only supposed to have to shave the top third I think. Try using masking tape next time it isnt as sticky and it doesnt hurt so much when you pull it off. Hopefully one of the breeders can give you better direction and maybe a better tape to use too. I used masking tape because it wasnt as painful to get off. |
Tarawood- I do Cheri and she is a WIGGLER - I use a ONE inch head Wahl trimmer and quickly shave upwards - for the long hair on the edges I use both baby sizzors and the trimmer - they do sell trimmers that will not slice into the ear when you do the edges - I'm really careful and leave a tiny bit on the edge of the ear so I don't touch skin I only tip her ears - the upper 3rd is recommended only - they should stand on their own without taping - my girls went up and down like yo-yo's and they didn't have to be taped - It's really easy - you just have to be FAST with a young puppy |
Tara, have you tried glueing? Check this out http://www.petedge.com/shopping/brow...eyword=zx74206 It's for "Tear Mender" and it's a glue to use for setting the ears, just apply on the top 1/3 of the inside edge and hold ear together. The oils from the ears will make it let go in a few days and then the ears should be up. I've heard that it's used a lot. Hope it helps...Theresa & The Boys :aimeeyork |
when shaving make an inverted "v" 1/3 down front and back of the ear. If you use tape I found that masking and painters tape 1" worked the best and took far less hair of the babies ears. The glueing works but the paper tends to curl in a day or two so they have to be replaced more often than taping. I use fabric glue and tend to use both methods. I use tape from the beginning, as they begin to stand I will use the glue for a bit...then if they fall I go back to tape. The main thing is to be consistant! if one falls and they other stays up then tape the one falling only. |
