Sad - Wet Swifters I know we are all very careful with our furbabies. BUT I just wanted to share this story: We just learned from a friend that their cousins 9 year old (3lbs) Yorkie had passed away a couple of weeks ago. Somehow he was able to get a hold of a Wet Swifter, and he was chewing on it and he died. Please remember to keep all cleaning items out of reach - even the ones we throw away in the trash. All it takes is a second :( |
I am so sorry for their loss. They must be devastated. Thank you for reminding us to be careful. I really need to do a thorough check because I am guilty of leaving things out without thinking since there are no little children around. |
:( :( :( :( :( how sad and that really can happen so easily to any of us...I don't use that product just because of the rumors or truths I've read - I've never known if they were true but after reading this it sure sounds like it is |
Such a sad story, that family must be devistated. I use the swiffer wet pads, just to quickly clean up little accidents. Im gonna stop using them after hearing this. My prayers to that family. :hands: :hands: :hands: :hands: |
I'm sorry to hear of your friends loss :( Thanks for the warning. We had to put the trash in our bathroom on top of the toilet tank because Rocky was able to get into it. It's just like have a child around. |
Thanks everyone, I will pass on your well wishes. I think they would be happy to know that maybe there story would be helpful to other Yorkie parents. ...I thought my hubby was joking when he told me "Wet Swifters" are dangerous. I said NO - that's a myth, but when he told me what happened, well, it makes sense. There are chemicals in those things and if a little 3lbs (and even if he weighed more) was chewing on it, even for a few mins, it turned out to be deadly. very sad... |
That is so sad. I can't even imagine what she is going through! It will definitely serve as a reminder to me to be extra careful all of the time. |
OMG, thanks for the warning, I was just putting those on my grocery list thinking it'd be easier than getting the mop and bucket out all the time. I'm so sorrry your friends lost their little one:( |
I used to use that until we got our furbabies. I now only use water, incase they lick the floor. How awful, I so sorry for their loss. |
My cousin e-mailed me this a long time ago...I will cut and paste it, she wrote: I recently had a neighbor who had to have their 5-year old German Shepherd dog put down due to liver failure. The dog? was completely healthy until a few weeks ago, so they had a necropsy done to see what the cause was. The liver levels were unbelievable, as if the dog had ingested poison of some kind! The dog is kept inside, and when he's outside, someone's with him, so the idea of him getting into something unknown was hard to believe. My neighbor started going through all the items in the house. When he got to the Swiffer Wet Jet, he noticed, in very tiny print, a warning which stated "may be harmful to small children and animals." He called the company to ask what the contents of the cleaning agent are and was astounded to find out that antifreeze is one of the ingredients. (actually he was told it's a compound which is one molecule away from antifreeze). Therefore, just by the dog walking on the floor cleaned with the solution, then licking it's own paws, it ingested enough of the solution to destroy its liver. Soon after his dog's death, his housekeepers' two cats also died of liver failure. They both used the Swiffer Wetjet for quick cleanups on their floors. Necropsies weren't done on the cats, so they couldn't file a lawsuit, but he asked that we spread the word to as many people as possible so they don't lose their animals. This is equally harmful to babies and small children that play on the floor a lot and put their fingers in their mouths a lot. PLEASE, EVEN IF YOU DO NOT HAVE BABIES, SMALL CHILDREN OR OWN A PET -- PLEASE FORWARD THIS ON! I am sorry for your family loss...:( This is a great thread as a reminder. I always tell people for their doggies they MUST baby-proof their homes. |
Not true!!! I just want to let you all know that the swiffer wet jet dog-dying horror stories are urban legends. This is actually a fairly old one. You can read about it here: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/swiffer.asp Whenever you hear frightening stories, check them out at snopes. |
Thanks for the info...That is just soooo sad... :( I just bought a swiffer, but not the wet jet kind, just the regular one with dry cloths...I'm so glad I didn't buy the wetjet!!! |
Here is additional information from the ASPCA about this being false: http://www.aspca.org/site/News2?page...ticle&id=16054 |

Yes, I do agree that the swiffer wet jet dog-dying horror stories are urban legends. BUT, my story about the little Yorkie that died as a result of chewing on a wet swifter is true. I just wanted to share what happened, as it did happen and can happen. :( |
