Pitbull attack on Elderly Yorkie
 

Yesterday a neighbor was walking her 12yr old Yorkie who recently
was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Poor baby lost the sight in one eye
already. We have a pitbull who plays with owner in our dog walking area
UNLEASED everday. It is a law that all dogs must be leashed at all times
and leash not to exceed 6ft in length. This pit really is well behaved and
never bothers anyone. Until yesterday! My neighbor was walking her
Yorkie and the pit saw it and jumped on it pinning it to the ground
growling and snapping. The pit's owner kept yelling get off and the dog
paid no attention. He ran and pulled the pit off the Yorkie and poor thing
was scared to death but not bitten. Everyone was shook up pretty
bad. After getting things talked out everyone went home.
What do I see this morning while walking Buddy.
The PIT IS BACK OFF LEASH! Now what could be going on in that owner's
brain! He got lucky once why give this dog another chance of attacking
something. Now I have to get involved and report this. I just could not
believe he would have the nerve to allow his dog offleash ever again.
So tonight I have several calls to make. The next incident could be my
fault it I ignore it. What would you do?

I would report it too...it would just weigh on my conscience if something happened to another dog. The owner needs to know that she is responsible for her dog's actions. And if the first incident didn't scare her straight, then she needs a wake up call from the authorities. Good luck!

Id call & report it, and I have several times on dogs running loose in my neighborhood. I had 2 chase me into my car, after calling on them twice, I no longer see them running loose. Neighbors across the street let their dog run also. It attacked a small dog on a leash. I heard a commotion outside to see this big dog attacking a person & their little dog on a leash. I called 911. They got a fine, & I also think the person that was attacked is suing, because they have talked to me since I witnessed it.

I would do the same. I for one, finds it very disturbing that people who owns big/small dogs and off leashing them in public parks/areas that requires them to leash their dogs. For small dogs, it is dangrerous because I live in the city and cars are everywhere. I also have many people doing that in my area and it irks me because they own dogs like German Sheppard, Boxers and my Yorkie and myself are both small size. Any of those dogs run after me or my Yorkie, I will not be able to fight them off. I have a Boxer in my area that is often off leashed and I have seen him in hunting mode when he sees puppies/small sized dogs. Once, the boxer was on leash and walked near me, I carry my baby off and I did have a short conversation with the owner about letting his dog off leashed when he is not supposed to. He 'thinks' that his dog is not getting enough exercise on leash hence he off leashed him. I think he probably is lazy to be pulled around because that is what his dog does. The owner is at fault for not training the dog especially one with that kind of strength. I will report him if I see him off leash his dog again. Enough is enough.

You are doing the right thing Carol. I would definately report it and tell him to his face, he needs to get that dog on a leash, ESPECIALLY after the previous day's attack. I don't know what he thinks he is trying to prove.

This is why I am so against these dogs -- we can't seem to come up with an idiot owner law so they need to regulate the dogs and keep them out of public areas. I know many, many people will say they have one or know someone who has one that is as gentle as a lamb. But you never know when they will attack. Every attack I read about was from a dog that seemed well-behaved until that moment. It is like walking around twirling a loaded gun. That gun can be twirled in public time and time again without hurting anyone. But suddenly one day, the owner slips and what happens? It goes off and someone is hurt. No loaded weapons in public -- no pit bulls in public -- and especially not one that is off a leash!

Report it! Rules have been made because there are so many irresponsible people.

Can you ask the owner to put the dog on leash??
If he/she refuses, then I would report.
I agree that I would think common sense tells me that if my dog snap at other dog then I'd put my dog on leash now on but seems this owner needs little reminder.
Just a thought.....

I'm glad the yorkie's o.k..but honestly why would the owner take that chance again?

It's because of the knuckle-headed owners like him that pit bulls have gotten into so much trouble.

Grrr......they can be lovely dogs when properly trained and socialized.

I agree with Akina....I would approach the owner first and if he still doesn't leash his dog then I would report him...

I would report it as fast as I could dial the cell phone. I see a tragedy just waiting to happen.

Several of us got together last night and deceided to report it.
So it was reported with the condo association as well as animal
control. I do feel much better knowing, hopefully, he will leash
his dog.
