My Giant Yorkie So my yorkie, Theo, was out on the town with me and I decided to weigh him. Now, he is a bigger guy, not fat, just tall. He weighs 11.5lbs! I love him so much so I would never dream of taking him back, but it is kind of a downer to have every single person comment on how big he is for a yorkie. Any one else able to relate? |
oh yea when i took harley in to get fixed at 6 months he was a little over 6 lbs. and the receptionist was like "is he a pure yorki?? because he is soo big.." |
I've only had 2 yorkies, my 1st Spencer, was also a big boy,at his worst he was about 12 pounds...Then came the prescription diet food. But he was happy all the time!!! Winston, my 2nd, is now 3 years old , and about 7.5#s. One time when I had Spencer out for a walk, a women stopped to ask me about using him to breed her little furbaby, he had a beautiful coat and coloring, but then I told her how much he weighed...NO WAY...oh well...it was probably better. |
welllll.... my boy Tootie is a whopping 16 lbs! you can see him in my Avator, see <<<< he is ALL yorkie, in personality, but I am not so sure someone didnt get into the hen house.. LOL... I get comments all the time, but o well, thats their problem... he is registered, but that doesnt matter at all to me.. he is a DOLL! d |
Awww pay no attention to what others say/think about him, hes SO CUTE!!! I would prefer a bigger yorkie over a tiny one because you can actually "play rough" without having to worry  |
I have two big Boys one 13lbs and 16lbs. I Just Say "More to love" and walk away. They may be big but they are all Yorkie. |

Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Nice to see another Michigander here. |
Miko is somewhere between 10 and 11lbs now and every once in awhile people will say that he's kinda big for a yorkie, but we don't care. He is the sweetest dog in the world with the sweetest face. We just love him sooo much and couldn't be happier with him :) |
My 10 week old yorkie is already 4 lbs -about the same weight as his dad! He was the biggest of the litter but had the best personality. He is very healthy |
lol, well, you can all just tell them that your baby's parents didn't read the standard! If they're a larger Yorkie, and people question it, you could say that they're a passage to the past when back in the day of "Ben", Yorkie's used to be between 10 and 18 pounds. ;) It's not until the 50's I belive that we started breeding them down to the 4-7 pound "preference" of the breed club. |
Yey! Awww! You guys are really great! You make me feel so much better about my chubby bubby. I was beginning to think that I was the only one that had a pup that tipped the scales. :D |
Mine are 6 and 10 lbs and when I was at a festival once a heard one lady say" Yeah shes got the biger kind of yorkies". Jewels the 6 lb one seems really small to me. Chachi is bigger but we like him that size |
The last time I weighed my bigger one she was a little over 8#. She has really long legs, too. If I take her anywhere, people will always say what you guys have heard, "Are you sure she's a purebred?" She is also has a pretty wild personality. Very active and always gettting into trouble. :( I've noticed on the bigger Yorkies I've seen that their ears are down - my big girl's are down too. So, do ears that lie down and bigger Yorkies always go together? |
My Rudy is a big boy also. :) He hasn't been weighed since last October but then he was 10.5 lbs and now we think he's probably at least 12 lbs. He's really been healthy, so we feel very fortunate for that. Rudys ears are standing up and he has long legs. I think someone else said it but I think it's just more to love. :D |

i can relate to that! my BIL and his wife have a yorkie - his name is York! - and he weighs about that much. he is a big boy and absolutely adorable. you couldn't pick him up with one hand!:D |
This is a great thread! Ozzie is 13.5 pounds and I hear rude comments all the time. I DON'T mind people saying he's big ... that's a fact. I DO mind people either asking if I'm sure or just outright saying he is NOT a full Yorkie. How do they know? Are THEY suddenly in possession of MY AKC registration?:) |
Siu Pao is 10 lbs. There were some strangers saying he is big which I don't mind so long they weren't rude it is fine. Even his vet says that he is the biggest Yorkie among his clients lol.. |
Just tell them there is more yorkie there to love...:) |
Duncan weights in at 15 lbs and I just tell people he is my teapot. |
Buddy is 13.5lbs but I think he is even more now:eek: We will find out in May when he goes for his yearly. I, myself, had no idea a Yorkie could get so big! We just have to educate those who don't know.:p |
Max is 11lbs and Abbie is 14 lbs and people always ask me if mine are silkies. Both have the floppy years, too. Their size and ears don't matter to me--I just love them to pieces :p |

i think it is rude! that is like people that i have heard ask someone if that is her "real" child because it doesn't look like her - skin is a different shade or hair a different texture. |

I never imagined Yorkies got that big (big as Ozzie and bigger according to YTers!). I guess because I always heard the standard 7 pounds max. What's odd is that our first Yorkie, who never exceeded 7 pounds had the dainty little feet and tiny frame, had floppy ears. Most we could ever usually succeed at was getting one to stand up at a time. Ozzie, however, almost always has ears at attention. Go figure! Whatever size they are though, Yorkies are collectively the most adorable breed ever. I have never seen such a range of features, sizes and personalities among any other dogs. Which, makes them infinitely more human than dog. |
I have wanted a Yorkie for years and then finally got one. Expecting Banjo to grow to "normal" Yorkie size. He is now 11.1lbs. lol still theres more to love and has bounds of energy. You are what you are. and am gratefull I have a happy healthy dog.:) |
Bob is 18 pounds and his personality is all yorkie..His ears are down but I dont care and Im always asked what kind he is..Well hes a big Yorkie..His eyes show green in photos..Hes a sweet dog regardless. |
