Weight Gain? I took Milli to the vet the day we got her, 2/17. She weighed 3.2 lbs. and was just shy of 12 weeks old. The vet told me then that she'd be a BIG yorkie, probably 7 pounds at least. I had planned on her being about 6 pounds, and I was perfectly happy with that, and accepted that she might be bigger. I took her for her shots yesterday 3/10, and she hasn't gained any weight-in fact, she lost-she was 3.1 lbs. She's now just shy of 15 weeks. The vet said he wasn't concerned, and that she would probably just be really small-that he'd be surprised if she even got 5 lbs judging from her frame size. I asked if I should feed her more, and he said that she looked healthy, and that we didn't need to increase her food. I'm confused...first she's going to be HUGE, and now she's going to stay tiny? Isn't this age supposed to be a growing period for them? Would you be worried if your yorkie stayed the same weight between 12 and 15 weeks? |
Their weight can fluxuate from time to time. The rule of thumb is to double their weight at 12 weeks. So I would say around 6 pounds would be a good guess. When I first got Ollie she didn't gain for a few weeks either. The upset of changing homes can get them off their feed for a while. |
Right..but she's eating and acting normal, and seems very comfortable here now. She was a little out of it the first couple days, but acts as if she's been here for years! I know the rule of thumb about doubling weight at 12 weeks, but I'm confused as to why the vet would say she was going to be big, and now he doubts she'll get to 5 lbs. |

Who knows why he changed his mind. They get as big as they get. They go through growth spurts. It's all just a guess anyway. No one can tell you for sure how big they will get, some quit growing at 10 months, some still grow a little after they're a year old. |
Update So I weighed Milli again this past weekend, and I'm confused and a little concerned...She has actually LOST weight since her last checkup. 12 weeks: 3.2 lbs. 15 weeks: 3.10 lbs. 19 weeks: 3.04 lbs. So she's getting smaller?? The only thing I can think of is that she was chubby before, eating too much of a not-so-great food when she was with the breeder. Now that we've brought her home and we're feeding good quality food and she's getting exercise, she's grown, but she's not as fat as she was before? Could that be? I took her to a different vet in the same office, and she said that Milli would just be small-that she looked healthy, and as long as we were feeding her well, not to worry...but still! |
I guess it goes to show that the Yorkie wt. charts are only a starting estimate. Gain a little, lose a little. When my human kids go through a growth spurt, it doesn't necessarily mean that they gained weight to. My kids, especially my youngest seems to fluctuate a lot. I would think the same could hold true for pups. I am not a vet though, and at least your vet states the pup is healthy. |
