I am still having a debate about which sex to choose but I think I'll go with a male. But I need some feedback about them.


I hear that boys still hump after they are neutered, is that true?

Are they harder to potty train?

Do they mark their territory outside or inside? And can it be a problem?

Is humping be a habit or just a stage?

Fred is 5 months old and he has not started humping, lifting his leg or marking territories (thank goodness) but I have heard that boys still hump after they are neutered.
We potty trained Fred within 2 months of having him. He is 99% trained but still has his occassional accidents. He will pee outside when we let him out and he will pee on the pee-pee pad when noone is around to let him out. With my limited knowledge and stories I have heard, potty training might be more up to the owner than the dog.

I'm no help - we have 3 girls and they all hump each other sometimes ...sideways ...backwards - & totally clueless :D

I think they just go thru the motions - Chanel also has her boyfriend Magilla that no one is allowed to touch but her - so ....I guess it's not just a boy thing -

female dogs can hump also. Yes i think they can still hump after they are nuetered. It probably depends on the dog because i had a one year old male yorkie (chico, R.I.P.) that did not hump at all.

I have a 9mo old Male, he is not neutered yet. He marks all the trees along our walk but doesnt mark inside my home. I think he only marks outside to cover up other dog marks. He was harder to potty train than my female. My female took about 2 weeks and Max was about 2 months 80% and by 4months he was 99%. He doenst hump anything, not his toys, not our legs lol, but he has tried to hump my female, not sure if it was in playing or what but he has tried about twice on her.

Is she neutered?

I have a Pom that we adopted almost 2 years ago. He is neutered but I don't know how old he was when that happened. We took him to the vet shortly after we got him and the vet said his best guess is that "Baby" is about 9yr at that time. He does still hump and he does still mark. The humping isn't too frequent but the kids will laugh when they see him cause he doesn't care if the humpee is male or female. My females do it too. My 4 mo Mr. Big, has only done it once or twice, that we've caught.

I don't think boys are harder to potty train but once Pirogue start lifting those legs he was a big boy and didn't want to use the pads or paper. When I put the paper down now, I always lean some up against the wall for him to pee on, or crumple a big wad of paper and lay it on the other papers so he can lift on it. Sylvia

Are they harder to potty train? - Mine wasn't hard to train at all.. in fact he was pee pad trained in a just a few days and was 100% in a few weeks. My female has been a nightmare to potty train.. it's been over a month that I've had her (plus the several months the breeder had her) and she still doesn't get it.

He actually didn't start marking until after he was neutered which was weird. I have to use a belly band when we are at someone else's house, especially if they have dogs. For the most part he has never marked at our house.. only twice and I think it was due to bringing in our second dog. Tuffy doesn't lift his leg to potty unless he's marking so if I see that leg go up in the air I give him a stern warning. It's really not a problem for me, I guess I've gotten used to watching him when we are out and about, but in the house it's not a problem at all.

Is humping be a habit or just a stage? - I don't think it's just a stage.. he humped as a puppy and humps as an adult. The key is to train them not to do it. My female Yorkie humps too, so humping isn't gender specific and I've heard females mark too.

Duke is one and half years old, is neutered, and does not hump (thank goodness).

Duke does mark inside the house, but he did mark outside when I first brought him home.

I don't know whether boys are harder to potty train than girls or not, because I have always had male dogs.

As far as humping being a phase they go through, I think that it depends on each puppy. A friend of mine has a Boston Terrier that is 9 years old, and he humps all of the time. I don't like to go and visit her because he will immediately try to latch onto my leg. Not only does he hump legs, but he also humps the throw pillows on her couch and love seat.

My male Yorkie Riley was potty trained in 2 weeks. :littleang We litter box trained him so for 2 straight weeks we sat in the kitchen where his box is and played with him in the kitchen. If he went into any other room it was on our laps or in our arms. Any time he attempted to go to the bathroom, we put him in his box. He got the idea after 2 weeks of kitchen duty. :we're #1: Riley is neutered and the only thing he has ever been interested in humping before or after neutering is this stuffed dog I have. Maybe you should get your male something like that where it's ok to hump the toy but not you. Ya know? RIley used to hump this toy ALL THE TIME before neutering, but afterwards, he doesn't seem to do it so much anymore. Good luck with your new puppy when you get it. Yorkies are great! :yorkiesar

Newf is almost 8 months old, he has never lifted his leg. He still squats. He was neutered at 6 months old. He humped before the neutering and now after, but it is only one toy in particular. So, now the toy has the name of LOVER. But, it doesn't happen that often. As for the training, it was a breeze. The breeder was paper training before we got him. So, now he will do his business on his pee pee pad if we are not home . He will also go outside too when we are home. I've already decided that my next baby will be a boy as well. If you get them neutered early enough it may never be a problem. Plus, a lot of females hump too.

I've had two male yorkies. My first was completely housebroken the first two months I had him (four months old). Gus is eight months and we are still working on it. I would say he is ninety five percent housebroken.
Female or male, I think it depends on the dog.

Gus has only marked his territory a few times outside on walks. Never in the house.
I wonder how much of a problem this is for people too. I've had six male dogs and none of them marked inside. I can't believe people would get a second or a third male if this happened a lot. I know I wouldn't.

I think some dogs do this when they are younger and it happens less and less as they get older. For Gus it is kind of a habit, I know I could get him to stop if it really bothered me. He mostly does it with his stuffed squirrel and if I took it away he would stop.

Male or female how can you go wrong? You'll still have the best dog in the world. :)

My Guinness is lifting his leg to pee pee at 4 1/2 months my husband is having a fit.

The only thing that our dog Comic would hump after being neutered is a stuffed bunny that belongs to my daughter. The bunny played The Easter Parade while being humped. I would hear that music chime out and I would jump up saying "He is at it again" We put the bunny away. Although my daughter had grown out of stuffed bunnies I think Comic still lusts for it. Poor Comic. As far as the marking goes. I still am preaching about spraying the area with perfume after you clean it. They will not go there again.

From what I understand, humping is not a sexual thing, but actually a sign of dominance. That is why they hump their toys, even after being neutered. They also do it more when they are younger because they are still trying to find their place in "the pack". My sister's girl dog humps everything in sight (including your leg) but my girl doesn't. And my little boy has been lifting his leg to pee for about 2 weeks now, and he's only 3 months old. As far as potty training- 99% for pee 50% for poo...we are having some problems there.
