Air Travel with a large yorkie - HELP! Now my daughter thinks she wants me to bring Tink with me when I go down to Texas in May for her wedding. ARGH! First I do, then I don't, then I do..... I have finally found several carriers that meet the airline requirements that I like. This is the problem. They can only be 9 inches high. The airline requires that the pet be able to stand up and turn around in it. Tink is WAY more than 9 inches tall. She's more like 12 inches just to the top of her back, not counting her head. I suppose she can turn around with her head down. She weighs a little over 7 lbs. I don't think I can take her on the plane with me. :( How can she be comfortable in a carrier that is only 9 inches high?!?!  I'm really worried about putting her in the cargo hold and then I have to go get her in Chicago and transfer her myself to the connection flight. I used to fly with Indy all the time but the restriction for the airlines that I flew was 11 inches and he was allowed to get out and lay in my lap. They don't let you do that anymore. American Airlines is pretty strict about that I hear. Anyone flown with a pet that tall in a little carrier? This is the carrier that I want to get for her. http://www.healthyluggage.com/smalpetonwhe1.html or http://www.rescuepetstore.com/pet-supplies-GPP200.html |
I, personally, would rather have my dog a little uncomfortable in a carrier, with me, than in the cargo hold. I flew a pup once from San Diego to Houston in the cargo hold and would never do it again. Hope you come to a happy medium. |
I have flown with dogs in the cabin but have also had to put my golden down below. She didn't have any problems BUT...I think I agree that I would rather my little one be a little uncomfortable and with me than down below. It probably won't be a very long flight and she'll just sleep most of the way anyway...so she won't need to stand up. In my experience they have never checked the size of the dog before, just ask the weight. I have never had them ask to see the dog inside. Good luck! Kim |
I was at the airport down here last week. A lady was walking her dog through security on a leash. No one said anything until she was getting ready to board. Then she put him in a carrier. It was a Maltese. |

That's a thot', to wait until we board to put her in the crate. |
One of my friends took her Cavalier Spaniel to Florida, in cabin, she weighs like 12 lbs and they only way she would fit in the 'airline approved carrier' was for her to lie down (she's pretty tall too). After 10 minutes of flight, she bit her way out of the bag (literally) and they hid her under a blanket on the lap. Then she just went to sleep... But I don't know what airline they flew. |
