No new shunts! Hi all. I haven't posted in a while because I have been so busy! My father in law passed away and there was so much to do! Indy went back to the surgeon yesterday and had his followup ultrasound to make sure both shunts were closed down and no new ones popped up. He has had 3 really normal bile acids since the second surgery so I was pretty hopeful. As it turned out, both shunts showed no activity and no new ones were seen so now he can be a normal dog! I am very grateful! He just had his second birthday in February and I am glad he will have the opportunity to have many more! Thanks to all on this website that have followed Indy through both of his liver shunt surgeries and been supportive!! Kim and Indiana:) |
Thats Great !! Congratulations. You must be so relieved , I am happy for both of you. |
Way to go, Indy! And happy belated birthday:) |
That is such wonderful news!! I love hearing liver shunt success stories! Were they extrahepatic shunts? My Miko has intrahepatic liver shunts...His can't be operated :( But it's managed through diet and medications :) |
Great news |
congratulations. it is sooooo good to know your baby is well. How often do you have to repeat bile acid tests to be sure it does not shunt again? I have a little yt who is having liver issues. We just got our first test back. |
Both of his shunts were extrahepatic. They thought everything was OK after the 1st shunt was taken care of, but even though his bile acids came down close to normal, he never quite made it to the really normal readings. At almost a year after the first surgery his bile acids started to climb again so I had him ultrasounded again and found out he had ANOTHER extrahepatic shunt. He went back for another surgery. They tell me only like 1 in 400 dogs get a second extrahepatic shunt after the first is taken care of, it's very rare, but does happen. His liver had really perked up even though he got a second shunt so after the second surgery his first bile acid test was completely normal, as was the next 2. He has to keep having the tests done every 6 to 8 weeks until he hits a year after the surgery, then they want to have them done at least 2 times a year just to monitor it. He has really blossomed into a handsome boy with a great appetite. At last test he weighed 15lbs! He's a real "mama's boy" and I love it!! He is worth every penny I've spent on him! |
