getting your furbaby to take medication My vet prescibed princess some vitamins but I can't seem to get her to take them as prescribed which is on an empty stomach. I have tried to hide the pill with a small amount of food but she leaves the pill in her dish. any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. thanks, lisa |
encase it in some peanut butter or velveeta cheese |
I would wrap cheese around them. Good luck. |

I'm more for the direct route: open the mouth, place the pill at the back of the throat and close the mouth. Immediately follow up with an extra tasty treat. If you're firm and sure in your actions, it goes smoothly. I give Tetley all his pills this way and he's only spat it back at me once. I tried the hide it in a piece of food trick and he found it every time. |
What I do that never fails... maybe because mine are little piggies... I put the pill in a small piece of soft cheese and have a second small 'backup' piece. Then I make sure they see BOTH pieces. They are so eager to get to that second treat that they gobble the first one right up without spitting out the pill! Mine don't often get people food so they get all excited for their treat! I always have to have extra cheese on hand so that the other kids get some to!:p |
how big is the pill? |
the pill is about the size of an aspirian |
ditto here.... cheese is the magic treat in my house... what I do, is give them a plain piece first, then the one with the pill... works everytime. d didnt mean to run you off... LOL |
I take the pill and wrap it in a tiny bit of cheese too. but... i also kind of place it back in their mouth so they dont spit it out. I also hold the chin up a bit so they have to swall it. I try to do this where the others can't get to the pill if it does happen to come out (never has yet). you know how they all run for things that is dropped on the floor? all of mine do it. I am afraid one of them will snatch up a pill that is not meant for them, so I am very careful. good luck. hope you get some good tips on this one. |

I slip Teagan's pills in a slice of a lowfat turkey hotdog...she loves it. Now whenever she hears me taking an Advil or something, she comes running to see if it's time for her medicine. I can't believe she still responds to rattling pills after all this timem because she hasn't had meds for months and months! She needed an antibiotic from the vet earlier this week - so now she gets her hotdog slice 2 x day for 2 weeks, and she couldn't be more thrilled. |
We have that problem with our kitty. Kitty will not be fooled by anything, even liverwurst or tuna. Our Yorkie baby goes for the liverwurst trick. But for kitty, my sister suggested we get one of those pill popper thingies you can get at the pet store for dogs. It looks like a syringe with the point cut in slits so you can fit a pill in the end of it. You then stick the syringe in the back corner of their mouth and push the plunger. It shoots the pill right into the back of their throat and they don't have a choice. They have to swallow it. It hasn't failed us yet. |

I had a vet tell me to do this years ago. He said to put the pill as far back as possible, hold the mouth shut while stroking their throat until they swallow. I only had about a 20% success rate with this method. Someone else told me to try blowing in their nose instead of stroking the throat to make them swallow. Lets just say that was a nightmare that left me with a really upset dog!! And that was with my mellow Sheltie... could you just imagine how a York would react!!    |
I try both methods, and whatever works best is the one I use. Why cause problems. Sherry Lynn you have the most beautiful dogs on your avatar. That collie is just gorgeous. |
I use velveeta cheese also, and they're never the wiser! They swallow it up whole w/o a second thought. I have sometimes used the method of popping the pill down the throat and smoothing the throat w/my hand after.. but the cheese method is so much easier for me :) |
I have some that stand in line, jumping on their hind legs, can't wait for their meds. Other's I have to fool and hide it in something, cause I can't get their mouths open to get the meds down. Some just take it right out of my hand...... |

Harvey Will Not Be Fooled Either, We Have Tried Everything - Now I Just Put Pill In His Mouth And Hold His Mouth Closed Until It Has Gone, I Give Him A Nice Treat Afterwards - But Still If Looks Could Kill - I Would Be Dead....... He Is So Not Impressed With Me At All. He Doesnt Bear A Grudge Though - Thankfully......... |
If you can crush the pill up you can put it in a little ranch dressing or creamed cheese. That never fails with my crew! I think I would ask the vet if he/she can prescribe liquid vitamins instead. That might be easier to get down ye old throat. |
I use one of these 3 methods: 1. Stick the pill inside of a small piece of soft cheese 2. Put it in a glob of Nutrical 3. Put it in a glob of peanut butter All these of these suggestions have always worked for me. Good luck! :D |
I use Pill Pockets. Their website is: www.pillpockets.com |

Such talented tongues our babies have!!!!! Mine have figured out how to manuever the pill out of the treat and spit it right back at me. The latest thing I've found that works GREAT for me is also good for the dog. Nutro has a new dessert out that is healthy (only 100 calories in the whole can, no added junk) and comes in 4 different flavors. My kids actually think they are getting people food, since the flavors are pumpkin, apple, berry, and carrot cake. Believe me, they smell WONDERFUL, and I've found they also make a GREAT Kong stuffer when I need to keep someone occupied for a while. |
If it's just a vitamin pill, maybe you could just find it in powdered form and sprinkle some into yogurt, cottage cheese or home made food. I mix up what's called healthy powder. |
