Hair all Matted and tangled!! I have a 4month old yorkie. HIs hair is wirey and cotton. We bath him two to three times a week. He has been to the groomers and will go there in two weeks. My problem is his hair right now is a mess. It is all matted down by his skin. I don't know what to do. I want to bath hiom tonight but I have read you need to get out the matts first and I have tried but he cries when I try to get them out. Please help!! |
Poor little baby - I hate to say this - but you may have to take the hair all the way down - they're REALLY hard to get out and it will hurt - have you tried Johnsons NO MORE Tangles - it helps get out matts but if it's really bad - it's buzz time ....then you can keep up with it as it grows back so this doesn't happen again - Puppy coats knot EASILY and they really need to be brushed every day. Also... - he's getting way too many baths - A puppy should not have that many as it strips the oils from the coat - A good investment is a superior product to bath him in and you'll see a difference. Try a really good shampoo and conditioner - and a leave in spray - there's lots of good ones and you want to spray him LIGHTLY cause too much and he'll itch - always rinse your puppy well after a bath and try to keep something on his hair to keep the moisture in ....too many baths will dry him out totally and you will end up with a very dry itchy yorkie - Good luck - I hope you can get the matts out .....if you have to cut him all the way - maybe buy him some cute shirts so he won't feel naked ? :D |
I was just gonna say...I got yelled at my vet about the once weekly bath, 2-3 sound like too too much for a puppy, also brushing them everyday really helps and should prevent the amtting from happening...I brush maximus' hair every morning before I go to work as well as clean his face with a warm wash cloth and wipe him down with some puppy wipes and he has been knot free and mat free so far..GOOD LUCK |
lol...I can't believe your vet yelled at you ...ouch ! I also wanted to add - the best thing I've used for getting out knots really is that Johnsons no more tangles - you can pick some up in the baby isle at a drugstore or walmart - it slicks the hair so you can pull the knots out gently - Then try using something like Ice on Ice everyday to keep them from happening - Clothes will cause excessive tangling so if you dress him - use a product to coat his hair so it doesn't knot under the arms etc.... |
grooming Don't wet matted hair..it will set the mats to the point they have to be cut out. I think you will find bathing 2 or 3 times a week won't be necessary if you get the coat in good shape, meaning ,mat free..I do my Yorks one a week...to 10 days The groomer may need to clip your dog in an easier length to care for..I was a groomer and a cotton coat is hard for the pet owner to deal with..also ask the groomer to fine out the coat. |
Had the same problem Max is also "cottony".....and he easily mats...... I tried may different detanglers....helped some but did not work on the big mats..... I went to Petsmart and bought a detangler tool called Matbreaker.......I was able to gently remove even the largest mat a little piece at a time. It is a wonderful tool for "cottony" coats. Maybe it would help you. Max and Maggie's mom in Oklahoma |
When my babies were younger they fought me when I tried brushing them. So I don't brush them every day. As they get older they seem to enjoy the brushing and will turn over so I can brush their tummies. They seem to like getting their back legs brushed the least. If they get a mat there I have to hold them down to get it out. Sylvia |
