Ear Plucking? What else? Ok, I took chloe to the vet and she has an ear infection. Apparently you are suppose to pluck the hair inside a yorkies ear? This helps keep the ear dry and keeps it from getting infection and bacteria. Well sadly for chloe I didnt know this and she has a painful ear infection. How come I didnt even know about this? Do ya'll do this to your yorkies? Or do you have your groomers do it? Our groomer didnt do it and didnt even mention it. What else do I need to know so poor Chloe doesnt have to suffer(we found out the hard way how serious hypoglycemia was too). I dont want poor chloe or anyone elses first yorkie to suffer. And I have had several small dogs so I thought I was knowledgable but yorkies have been completely different for me. |
I have never plucked the hair out of my dogs ears & I'm not sure if my groomer does it or not - I've never asked! I never knew you were supposed to do this. How do you do it? Is this something I should do myself or should I have my groomer do it? Now I'm scared that my dogs are going to get ear infections!! 1 more thing to look out for - sheesh! |
They are susposed to have this done so hair doesn't block the air to the ears - I've NEVER done it myself - but the groomers I went to did ...actually not the bad groomer they had.... but a GOOD one will. Also a vet may do it if you feel better using them and ask in advance. |
We had a thread on this a few days ago I believe...I'm too wuss to pull the hair from Maximus' ears so I make the vet do it ..so far I have been there every week (vaccinations etc...) so it has worked out...the vet said that the ears should be checked 1x a week after the bath and I should be taking any hair that is inside the ears out as well as clean the inside with a cotton ball dipped in alcohol(don't go too deep in they will shake any durt that far in loose). Once I take him to the groomer I am going to have her pluck whatever is in there 9as opposed to the vet) and then have my bf keep up on it because I feel bad..but supposedly it doesn't hurt the dogs..hope this helps |

I think the first time is the worst because there is alot..if you keep up with it every week it will be a minimal amount of hair and it should be okay... I'm still a wuss..I can't even look when the vet gives Maximus his shots so I'm there with you on low pain tolerance but it is necessary to prevent ear infections. The vet does it for me for free so I told him that after he is groomed I will try..but I may stop by if my bf can't do it so he can..lol |
im too scared to also pluck the hairs from my baby's ears.. they get so fidgety when i touch their ears or put scissors near them. but they did have an ear infection once and Ginger needed a deep cleaning, but no infection so far *knock on wood*. |
I bet with an ear infection AND plucking the hair it did hurt - normally it doesn't - I watched them do my girls and they didn't flinch - actually anyone doing ANYTHING to them is ok but let ME try to cut their nails and they act like they're being tortured... Poor thing - that was not a good first experience - but it will get better I bet ! I hope he ear gets better - They also can give you a cleaner that will remove build up in the ears for yorkies prone to infections - then again - you may never see another one - |
wow, i feel so bad for not knowing this before the infection. But she screamed so bad when they were plucking the hair. But this is proboly becuase her ears already hurt, bless her heart. They were already bleeding from her scratching them so hard. :( |
I tried to find the thread..I know it was here a few days ago...but basically it was about how many of us plucked their ears ourselves and what not..supposedly the groomer uses a powder which makes it less painfum (I don't have any experience with the groomer yet..so I don't know)..but the vet kinda just pulls them..I feel bad but Maximus lets him..now ME...I CAN'T EVEN BRUSH HIS HAIR..without a hassle...LOL |
Poor thing! I hope she feels better soon!! |
Dont feel bad, I learned the hard way to. The second week I had Bridget she had an ear infection. The vet showed me how to do it, and explained it really isnt to painfull, which I would say I believe since she doesnt even whimper when I do it. Just be gentle on only pull a few at a time, they even come out by pulling with your finger tips. If you do pull to much at once, then they will let you know. Good Luck |

You just use a powder that is made for ears and squirt it in the ear. Massage ear at the base. The clamp that you use can make a difference. Use a curved mosquito(surgical instrument readily available in doggy catalogs) clamp it over small stands of hair and quickly pull. If the ear has never been done before I would suggest you have a vet or groomer do it. After the first time you can do it yourself with very little discomfort. None, compared to ear infection..I always clean the ear with cotton applicators after to get excess powder out. |
