Oh my .. how terrible, I hope you heal quickly. Just thank God that your husband got there when he did. |
Brenda, I am so terribly sorry that you are having to go through this!! I am thankful that your husband came when he did! I have a question about your surgery, if you don't mind? When your surgeon does your foot surgery, did he mention using a bone from the "bone bank"? The reason I asked, my sis injured her wrist and, being the ninny she is, figured it was a sprain and didn't have it checked out. About two years later she began having big problems with it. Long story short, she had cracked a bone and had to have a bone graft when surgery was done to repair it. The surgeon took bone from her hip .... and the wrist, though not able to bend it, never ever gives her any problem at all. Her hip, where they took the bone, on the other hand, hurts all the time. In the winter she can hardly walk the pain is so bad. I have had three back surgeries .... one required a bone graft, which my neurosurgeon did with bone from the "bone bank". I have never had a problem with it. I felt that I had to tell you this when I read that they were planning to take bone from your hip. It's just something you may want to discuss with your surgeon since it's a few days before your surgery. Perhaps there are others who may be familiar with the procedure. I want you to know that I will be praying for you and if there is anything that I can do, please ask! God bless you! |
I can truly feel your pain!! I fell on black ice over 2 years ago and along with other injuries, I broke my right leg in 3 places and ripped my right foot off! I had to have everything plated and screwed back together! No walking... no driving... no fun!! Some things that I found helpful that might help you, too... Get a tote bag or something that you can easily wrap around your neck to carry things. Like someone said above it's hard to have anything in your hands when you're on crutches or a walker. If you have a cast before they give you a boot, you'll probably have problems finding a sock big enough to cover your toes to keep them warm. I found that a baby's stocking cap worked just great. To take showers, I put a plastic patio chair in my standup shower. It had arms and was much easier too use and WAY cheaper than using one of those benches that you get at the medical supply store. I just kept my leg outside of the shower. And if you don't already have one, get a handheld shower head with as long a cord as you can find. They're reasonably priced and easy to install. Since you've already had a surgery, you may know about medical supply stores. They have all kinds of things to make your life easier. The things that I found most helpful were: bags for over your cast so you can shower (kept the cast MUCH dryer than the garbage bag and rubber band that I had been using!) a switch that I could turn lights on and off without having to get up (Hubby couldn't find a Clap On Clap Off like the commercials) a long armed tool so you can reach things without getting up (we came to call it the a$$-grabber because thats what I did with it when the Hubby would walk by) I hope you can have someone with you for a while because you'll have trouble getting around at first. Let me know if you have any questions or if I can help in any way! Good luck with your surgery. Oh.... and if you don't already have one.... get a laptop and wifi. You're going to be on YT a LOT! :p |
I know... I'm being obnoxious here, but it rang so close to home for me!! I just read what Bettyanne wrote. I may have to have a similar surgery for my neck, and they said they would take the bone from the hip, too. Everyone that hears that says the same thing as Bettyanne. The problems and pain with the bone graft were the worst part. So thanks for the bone bank info, Bettyanne! If I have to do it I know it's an option. |

To TOTO Mom-- yes he said he might use the artificial bone graft stuff if the blood supply to my hip or foot isn't suffient. See I have had 2 other back surgeries and still need more. They now want to tackle the herniated disk between my shoulders.. I said " NO WAY" they go thru the front to get thru it.. Very extensive and long surgery.. I can't go thru that again. I have soooo much nerve damage now in my legs and feet that he said there might not be enough blood flow to the site so he might have to use the Artificial bone graft. My spine is falling apart. .I mean it. I have Osteoporosis , and yes I have taken Vitamins all My life and xtra Calcium which I take more now. Just bad bones inherited. My mother and grandmother both had bad bones. The only thing they had that I don't have is a hump in my back. Thank God. I do have pain all the time. I have a pump inside me that gives me pain meds when I need them. They are taking that out next week an put a Tens unit in and see if that would work better. The pain meds are really starting to get to me and my tummy. If my Liver & Kidneys aren't shot they will be. Just too much happening to me in the last 5 years. I have had both knees replaced twice in two years.. the first one didn't take. So they had to glue, screw you name it to make them stay in. Then I had to have both wrist operated on. I Have arthritis in them and they had to clean it all out and take out some cyst that was on the joints.. Then I had the back problems. Too much to mention on that.. lol. Then the feet problems. Then I had to have a hysterectomy last Novemeber also. I had Uterine cancer. THank God they got of the cancer when they did the hysterectomy. They had to cut me one end to the other an it took me quite a while to get over that..In the Mean time. .that put me thru menapause.. and I am fighting that now. LOL.. Like I said.. I still try to keep my sense of humor. I sing alot in the summer at Fairs and etc. So I have to get well people! Lose this frigging weight an Get well! People are asking for me! LOL.. Really .. So sorry Brenda. Been there, done that. I have 3 surgeries on my wrists and elbows; broke my foot and couldn't drive, do stairs, walk, sleep. You're in my prayers. |
I will keep you in my prayers, thank God that your husband came on time:hands: |
HAHAHA! I'm laughing because I didn't think you would know about all of the gadgets in the medical supply store!! It looks like you've been down a long road already! It was a whole new sub-culture to me and I was so excited the first time I was wheeled into one and saw all the gadgets that they had!! Wifi... hmm.. I'm blonde too, so I can't tell you what it stands for or how they do it, but it means wireless something. They come in and set it up so that a laptop can be hooked up to a regular PC so that you can go anywhere within a certain range and play on the Internet. You can access your files on your PC, print stuff and do whatever you need to do while sitting/lying anywhere in your house. No wires to worry about... no sitting up if you can't... It's a lifesaver when you're hobbled! Again... lots of prayers and good wishes! |
Man, you have had your share of bad happenings. Good thing the breeder was decent and atleast you got your 500 bucks back. I wish you the best and a speedy recovery Brenda. |
Brenda I looove the pictures and I think you are still beautiful! Congratulations on your new Great Grandson - he is sooooo adorable! |
Congratulations ... your new great grandson is precious!! So there was a bright spot in your day yesterday!! :p I hope you had a restful night and will perhaps feel a little better today. Sounds like you have had way more than your share. I inherited "bad bones" too ... I tell Patrick that if I ever fall, I'll snap like a twig!! One of my surgeries was through the front of my neck. When my doctor told me what had to be done, I said "I don't think so!!" :) I really had no choice and the worse part was having to wear that darned P-collar for so long. I think the thought of what was going to happen was worse than the surgery itself but recovery was actually easier than the surgeries in the lower back. One thing is for certain ... if there's anything you need, we're all here for you!! |
CONGRATULATIONS!!! Brenda, you were a beauty when you were younger and still are!!! The baby is just adorable. And your little yorkie puppy, too cute. Handsome hubby too! You have been through so much. Thanks for sharing your story with us. You are an inspiration to me. I will keep you in my prayers. |
Congratulations on the birth of your Great Grandson, Kaiden -- he is precious! How wonderful is that!!!! Thanks for the pics -- you are one of those rare women who just don't age. You are as pretty holding Kaiden as you were in your cowgirl duds singing with Loretta...... I am like WOW! We have a STAR on board!!!!! My husband is a HUGE country fan..... I might have to get your autograph. Hope all goes well with your recovery -- the neck surgery doesn't sound much fun at all -- the only surgery I have ever had was tonsils out at 17 and tubes tied after the birth of my third child, so I can't relate -- I can only send get well quick hugs :ghug: |
