Any Suggestions for biting and chewing? Cocoa is 12 weeks old and no matter what I do (say NO firmly, shake a tin can of pennies, act dramatic or give him a toy) he will not stop chewing on my hands, feet, arms, etc. I know he is just playing but, it hurts! Any suggestions on how to stop this before he thinks its ok to bite? |
Max doesn't bite me, but he does Piper. Sometimes I just have to give him a little pinch to get him to stop. He grabs on to Piper and won't let go. She is so good with him. She'll come running to me with him hanging on. I give him a pinch on his back to get him to let go, & say no bite. Then I try & distract him with a toy. Poor Piper, she won't bite him back. Then after I get Max off of her, she jumps on the couch to get away from him. We go through this about 3 times a day. |
Lexi would do this non stop when I first got her at around the same age. But all I can honestly say is that with patience, and constant firm "NO's" he will get it! Lexi still does that once in a while when she gets really excited and wants to play. But I just say NO! and ignore her until she realizes that she will not get attention by nipping. She almost always just backs off and lays down and waits till I am ready to play with her. Oh...Clapping loudly really worked well too. It kinda snaps her out of it. Then giving her a chew toy to redirect her attention helped. I hope this helped a bit! |
When she bites you, put her down, get up, walk away, and ignore her for a few minutes. This is a negative reaction you are giving her to the biting and soon enough she will stop. She is a puppy and ALL Puppies do this. Just give her a bad reaction to it and it will evetually stop. |

Did you try those sour apple sprays? Maybe that might work? I never used them but I think that might be one other option to consider. |
No, I have never used those...is that safe to put on your hands and stuff? Or is it just for furniture and things? |
I wouldn't stress too much, at 12 weeks chewing is as much about exploring and tasting new things as it is a bad habit. Just remove your hand and say NO firmly (distracting with a object you do want him to chew perhaps?). In time the pup will stop. I don't think there is any need for any drastic action at this age. |
Missy does this too with us, nibbles on our fingers and toes until she starts biting.. i think she's testing her biting strength... but as soon as i do a high pitched puppy yelp, she starts licking and kissing instead because she thinks she actually hurt me.. so i feel i'm teaching her how hard she can bite... I also notice when she's lying on my lap, she'll nibble on my finger then fall asleep... like it's her pacifier!!! that amazed me!! Good LUCK!!! |
Thumper does this too. He's almost 6 months old. His trainer at Petsmart said to do what RLC said - walk away and ignore him for a little while. I'm confused about that though because when he's in that really playful mood when he's biting, if i get up he just follows me and pulls and bites on my pant leg or my feet/shoes. I don't want him to do that either. Do i just keep ignoring him while he's doing that? |
