Cats and Yorkies? I have a gorgeous but moody Maine coon, called Leo. I adopted Leo about 2 plus years ago from a couple who lied to me about their allergies. Leo is very gorgeous, adorable but moody in the same time. He loves you to talk to him, acknowledge him when he is around but does not like to be picked up or touched. He also loves to eat anything but food: cashmere sweaters, sweat shirts, tampon wrappers, etc. Leo has been around cats and dogs and oddly enough he does very well with them. He actually loves to play with my roommate's big puffy dog Otter (who is 3 times bigger than Leo) My dreams are finally coming true and I will hold my furbaby in my arms in April...Now, I am very worried because I feel like Leo will be heart broken and decieved. Please do not think that I am crazy but this has been eating me inside out. Do you guy have any other pets at home that you had before owning a Yorkie? How did they react? Did they feel betrayed? I know that I will love my Yorkie so very much as this has been my dream ever since a little girl. But I love Leo as well and the last thing I ever want is to break his heart. Please comment and share your stories and advise:) |
No cats here, allergic to them. I do have 2 other furbabies before getting Max. Piper & him get along great, but Misha still has issues with him. Misha was 14 months old when we got Max. She has been the princess in the house from day one. Now she wants extra attention, which I try to give her. Just give both lots of love. |
when we first got penny our first yorkie, we had a cat and they got along fine, cat was here first. she liked having a playmate and there were no problems at all. |
We have had a our cat for almost 5 years, we've had our dog 2. To make the transition easier for the cat we gave her her own room. We put up a baby gate & the dog is not allowed in there. That's where her food, & litter box are. It keeps the dog out of her stuff & she has a place to get away from him. It seems to work. Also we put the dog in his cage while we're at work & at night, this allows the cat to have free reign of the house at times during the day. |
I think it depends on the dog and the cat. We have to adults cats they are 7 years old. They do not want anything to with my two teapot yorkies. They are gated off in my daughters room and other rooms in the house. Your puppy will run after the cat! After all he is a dog.Gate off a room so the cat can have space.Someone told me they trained their dog --putting a lead on the dog all day and when he went for the cat they would say "Leave it". |
Just make sure to give your cat lots of attention And I am sure he will be fine. My cat didnt act rejected when I brought my two in |
I have 4 cats. When I am not home, Gracie is in her ex-pen which gives the cats a break from Gracie wanting to play with them. When Gracie has free run of the house, if the cats get tired of her they just "live up". My cats had never been around a dog when I brought Gracie home, and I was so surprised at how quickly they got along. There was no hissing, no spitting, just a bit of growling (there is still that when Gracie is a pest). Have fun with your furkids! |
Thank you all for your encouragement and suggestions! Ideally, I would definitely give space to Leo but the real question is if Leo is OK with the concept of space. As I mentioned in my previous message, Leo is a very "special" cat. He is sneaky first and foremost. He opens all doors and gates and anything in between. He climbs up ladders. He is very sweet and not agressive in any way. I know that if I were to put the doggie in a playpen, Leo would be the first one in there. If I place a xpen, Leo would be the first one to open the gate. I guess I just need to wait and see how things will turn out before making any judgements. Thanks all once again, it made me feel good to know that I am not the only one with a cat and a Yorkie. |
