Need treat advice! Gizmo is sooo not interested in the treats I got him.. They are cheap puppy treats i got at petsmart and maybe thats why! Any recommendations ??because it is kinda hard to train him to do anything when he puts his nose up to the rewards! |
It is probable because they are not high quality and don't smell very good -- have you tried freeze dried liver treats, rollover is another one they go for, yogourt drops :aimeeyork |
Treats  My Bogey, when he was a baby, liked honey nut cheerios & they were pretty cheap. He would get one every time he pottied on the pad ( which I think he did just to get a treat !) I to this day keep them in a drawer in the kitchen & you can't open any drawer in the kitchen without him coming in there to get his treat !!:animal36 |
yep...freeze dried liver, cheerios and puperoni is a huge hit with mine :D |
OH and those Walmart treats in the bags Walmart has those different treats in the bags...like bacon flavor, cheese flavor, etc. My yorkies have loved those from day 1. They also like the small biscuits which come in several flavors in one box...the SMALL ones..tho. Used these to train with....gonna use them on my baby puppies as well. |
I have a bunch of differnt treats because i like to change them around a lot. I bought a huge box of biscuits in different flavors in BJ's. We have Beggin Littles (HER FAVORITE). I have a giant jar of these things that look like Combos, they smell really good too and have bone marrow inside. For training i prefer the freeze dried liver which i cut up pretty small so she can have a few pieces. And like everyone has already mentioned, cereal. Chewy loves Frosted Flakes, Cheerios and cinnomon toast crunch. Those are the only three she has tried and loves. Good luck. Try to buy sample sizes and i find that variety doesnt allow her to get bored of something that way she is really excited. I think if i gave her the same treat every day she wouldnt be as happy. |
Mine really only like Pupperoni. |
Let me just tell you girl...I have THE PICKIEST dog on THE PLANET when it comes to dog treats, and I MEAN IT! I have bought, LITERALLY, probably 50 different kinds of dogs treats and Stedman (my male Yorkie) will only eat FIVE of them. ONLY FIVE...out of seriously, probably 50 different kinds! Now Tatum (my female Yorkie) is a little piggy and isn't picky AT ALL - she'll eat anything you put in her mouth :p The ONLY treats Stedman will eat so far are the following: Bestro's Chicken Jerky Sticks (the only ingredients are Chicken Breast, and Rice Flour). These are his #1 ALL TIME FAVORITE EVER Treats!!   Waggin' Train Chicken Jerky Tenders (the only ingredients in these are Chicken Breast Fillet, and Seasonings). He really enjoys these too, ALOT! Purina Chew-eez Carvers (there isn't anything "bad" in these ingredients, but there are more listed in these and I am too lazy to type them all out LOL). He likes both the Chicken and Beef flavor in these, but for some reason Stedman has a thing with "Chicken" and always PREFERS the Chicken flavors over ANY other flavor! SmokeHouse Chicken Chips - These are a new favorite that he has just discovered about 3 days ago - he loves them! Just Dog's Gourmet Yogurt Training Treats - I don't know if you have a Just Dog's Gourmet near you (it is a doggie speciality shop that sells fancy schmancy little dog treats, lol...and doggie clothes) - Anyway, he loves these things! And they are made with ALL human grade ingredients that are safe for dogs (and they really ARE good, because I've tried them - YUMM!) lolol Anyway, just thought I would list some treats for you as my little boy is extremely, EXTREMELY picky when it comes to treats as it sounds like yours is. So for MY Yorkie, I really DON'T have alot of treats to pick from because he just WON'T eat 99% of the ones I offer him  I promise you, you name a doggie treat - WE'VE TRIED IT! He just turns his nose up at EVERYTHING except the ones that I have listed. All of these treats are great though - they are his #1 FAVS! (ESPECIALLY the Bestro's Chicken Jerky Sticks!) - and I swear, if STEDMAN will eat these treats listed....ANY dog will! lol :p |
Vitakraft Yogurt Drops are awesome!! My dogs loooove them, and Miko is very picky. He has never liked treats either. Most, he liked for a couple of days, and then didn't like them anymore. After we found out about his liver condition, there are even less treats I can choose from, but he loves these yogurt drops. I found another treat he likes...Green apples!! Peeled, and cut into small pieces. I keep an apple in a baggie in the refrigerator, and cut pieces when I want to give him treats. |
I would definately recommend Yorkie Yummies made by YT member: chattiesmom. My Maddie is very picky and she loves them!!! Mind tend to like smelly soft meaty treats. They turn up their noses at most hard biscuit type treats. |
Keep the treat ideas coming --- I'm making a list. Matties hasn't had anything except apples, bananas, carrots and peanut butter. No doggie treats yet. I just wasn't sure what to buy. We have been using his puppy food for the reward system as a treat and he doesn't seem to mind. shelley |
Mine are a little on the picky side. The only treats they like is Alpo Snaps, Pupcorn and Cheerios. |
Honey Nut Cheerios I use honey nut cheerios too.,.,,, they are small, a little bit sweet and easy for him to chew.,,,, Samson is 4 months old so he has trouble with some of the treats being too hard are too big,.. He loves them. |
1 Attachment(s) I use Wellness Pure rewards treats. Lilo is CRAZY about them. she is not big on sweets so the yogurt drops didn't work for us, and since I care a lot what kind of food I give her, than I go with best quality food. I swear that she eats better than me!!! |
Tia's absolute favorite treats are freeze dried liver chops (I cut them into teeny pieces and use them when clicker training). Benny Bully is a good company, and there are others. Check the ingredients....should be only freeze dried liver listed. Tia also loves baby carrots. I slip 1 or 2 into her kong and she loves sto work one out and carry it away to crunch under a piece of furniture. So cute! |

Tatum's favorite treat is definitely the dried liver treats - sold at WalMart. She only gets those after bath time. Her everyday favorite is the Vitakraft Yogurt Drops. One thing our obedience trainer said about using treats during training is to use something different and highly desirable. Something that during your training session, the dog will do anything for. She didn't recommend your every day treats. During obedience classes, we used a hamburger patty, torn up in very tiny pieces. This is something that Tatum would not normally get. During new "training sessions" at home, like when I was teaching her to catch a small frisbee, I used Cheerios. Since they are so small and not over-filling, you can use quite a few of these during your session. If yours is a puppy, then using the Honey Nut Cheerios is a good idea because puppies generally need the sugar boost. Hope that helps a little. |
You could make your own useing cook ground liver in them. Also dogs love dried fruits. They love Kix, they love Gerber toddler snacks like the Fruit Chewy that are like gummy bears only a little softer. They love yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese and so on. Too many "real" foods and treats to choose from that is much better for them than all those dog treats that are loaded in things you can't even pronounce and I doubt you would eat. |
Cool Pipersmommy! Also, we give Miko a little yogurt after he gets his medicine everyday, It's kind of like his reward for being such a good boy taking his medicine. Plus, it's full of probiotics, which is great for them! |
Ozzie is a Three Dog Bakery boy all the way. in addition to itty bitty bones (IDEAL for small breeds) they have "Jump Up and Sit Bits" which are just a bit bigger than kibble. I usually get peanut butter or apple oatmeal. Here's a link: http://www.threedog.com/_scripts/Edi...p?CategoryID=2 |

I had to come back and correct myself! Tatum got a bath this morning and when I went to get her "special after bath treat", I realized that it's NOT dried liver, it's lamb lung pieces..... specifically, Uncle Sam's Natural Lamb Lung Tender Chips..... purchased from Wal-Mart. I think I saw someone mention liver treats and had that in my head when I tried to type lamb lung...lol! Try them..... Tatum thinks they are da bomb!!! :D |
