safe for the furbabies??? we tend to give our dogs "goodies" but not the store bought ones. We like to give them stuff like carrots, grapes, etc. they love it. But I have been warned about a lot of things like apples...the seeds having some kind of "poison" that can kill the dogs. can you guys give some advice as to what foods...fruits and veggies is the main thing I am thinking of...that are not safe. if you know of anything..please list it here. Also, if you have any ideas of good things to give to the pups that would be safe and appealing to them..please share that as well. I like to have stuff like the carrots in the fridge and it is a quick snack for the doggies. they LOVE it!!! thanks for your help here... |
I read here that grapes are no good for the dogs, but apples are ok but not the seeds and I think I read somewhere not the skin, anyway I wish I can help you more but I only give Pheobe, carrots, apples, sometimes mango, I try to give her other fruits like peaches, strawberries but she gets a little of diarrhea:confused:, veggies, broccoli, greenbeans, sometines hardboiled eggs, yogurts, cotage cheese, sharp cheddar cheese, oatmeal cookies, boy:tongue: (I think I having a senior moment lol) I can't think now. But I'm sure other yt member will help you more:thumbup: |
Grapes are a no no. Mine will eat apples peeled with no seeds, carrots, broccoli, peas, greanbeens, asparagus, sometimes a little watermelon in the summer. No tomatoes. No onions. Mine are not big fruit eaters. Be easy on the apples, lots of sugar for weight gain according to my vet. Mabe others can suggest more fruits & veggies theirs eat. |
Mattie love banana's and apples ( only the white meat on the apple, no skin ) and also raw carrots. But that's all we have tried so far. shelley |
grapes are a no-no? hmmm..I will have to stop doing that then :) Maggie has not had grapes cuz I am scared of her choking. But our other dogs get grapes. You know, now that I am thinking about it, I think I did read somewhere that grapes in large quantities are bad. but one every once in a while is not bad. but I think we are better safe than sorry. so no more grapes :) thanks for the help guys, I am curious to see what everyone else has to say. |
Dried fruits such as figs, dates, prunes, and apricots, as well as fresh fruits like apples, bananas, and berries. |
Hannah loves apples, steamed carrot peices, and peas. I read that grapes in lrg amt's are toxic and rasins too. |
Hannah also loves oatmeal and peanut butter mixed together. I roll it up in little balls and she loves that for a treat. |

My grandmother's 4lb maltese LOVES tomatoes! This is the first time I have ever heard of them being bad. We can not cook dinner that has anything to do with tomatoes without giving her her fair share...which usually ends up being quite a bit. She is about 6 now and has eaten them like crazy since she was a baby. Kim |
My yorkie book says... No chocolate --especially dark chocolate No cooked bones -- cooking a bone causes the bone to become brittle, and it will break into sharp splinters when your dog swallows a piece No Raisins, Grapes-- Recent studies have shown that raisins and grapes --even those that have been raised organically and have no pesticides-- can cause kidney failure in dogs. Other fruits and vegetables, though, are usually good treats. It says if your dog eats grapes or raisins to contact your vet right away -- it might be a medical emergency. No Onions- Dogs don't have the enzyme needed to digest onions, so eating them can lead to severe gastrointestinal distress. Large amounts of onions can cause your dog to become anemic. Garlic can have the same effect, but dogs rarely eat enough garlic to cause a substantial problem No uncooked bread dough -- it ferments and turns into alcohol in a dog's system which can poison your yorkie No greasy, fatty foods -- cause pancreatitis No caffeine -- an overdose of caffeine can cause your dog's heart to race, and too much can even cause cardiac arrest No avacados - a toxic component called "persin" is the culprit. Dogs have died from eating avocados, but the toxic does isn't yet known. No macadamia nuts - as few as six nuts have caused severe toxic reactions in dogs To learn more about toxic foods and other substances, go to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center's website (www.aspca.org). |
Mine love all people food. French fries being a fave, lol along w/green peppers, carrots, bananas and cheese :) |
Tomatoes are fine without the skin- it is the tomato plant that is the killer. Apples too are fine without the skin or seeds- the seeds are toxic. Why no skin, is because it can get caught in their throat like when you get a popcorn kernel caught in the back of your throat. |
