I thought the same thing and so did my Bichon friends. The breeder of the dog had a signed agreement with the owner that if she ever needed to find another home for the dog, she would be returned to her breeder. The breeder was devestated, but it would have taken a whole lot of money and time to try to sue the family or anything like that. She said she had been so careful to assure that all of the puppies she bred went to good homes and would always have good homes. She also said all she could get from the family was money and that wasn't what she wanted. She wanted good homes for the puppies she bred. It was a very sad thing and it affected a lot of Bichon people. We all wondered what the family would have done if the woman who died had asked that one of her nephews or sisters be buried with her. I worked with a woman who had her mother's dog euthanized when her mother died because she didn't want to take care of the dog. This dog was old, but certainly not dying. It was buried with it's owner, too. |
Please try not to be so hard on yourself for not staying with Madison. Dogs don't look at death like we do. They are very calm and accepting. I also believe that God looks after all of his creatres and takes each one back into his care when the time comes. Not everyone can be with a pet when it dies. Madison knew you loved her, I'm sure, and her sweet spirit went to a better place. |
Let go of the guilt of not being there when she was put to sleep. When I brought my 17 year old Yorkie in I stayed and held him after. I am now facing the same thing with his 17 year old sister and I will go the vets office but when it comes to the time she is put to sleep I will leave. Having done it once I realized it is very quick and they do not realize what is going on. My dogs know I love them from the 17 years they have spent with us. My biggest question is how do you know when you should. My baby can not see, cannot hear, due to shoulder problems cannot lift her head to look up (she is always looking down at the floor), her left leg gives out on her all the time and when she falls if she lands on her side - she cannot get up, she will only eat every 3 -4 days, she does not want to sit with anyone (not social at all anymore except sometimes with me at night). I could go on with other symptoms as well but I'm sure you get the point. So each day I struggle with the question.:( |
My cousin is a vet and a dedicated animal lover. I asked him about this a few years back when I heard of someone doing this. He says he gets calls for everyday. He will not do it and usually will beg (and has even offered money) the person to sign the dog over to the clinic. All of his staff are animal lovers as well, and when they can get the person to sign the dog over, one of them will foster (or sometimes keep) the animal until they find a good forever home. I asked why people do this, and believe it or not, so many people think it is better for the animal. They believe that turning it over to the pound is cruel. Or if they want to put the animal to sleep over a "behavior problem" such as difficult to housetrain or barking, or such....that the next owner will give the animal away as well. He told me dozens and dozens of people put the animal down b/c they bought it and it and it didn't meet breed standard. it is a horrible practice and should not be allowed. Makes me want to cry just thinking of it. |
I asked my vet and he said he would only do it if the animal was terminally ill and suffering. Putting an animal to sleep for no reason (other than the animal being an inconvenience to you) is MURDER. :thumbdown |
i cant believe that. i had read that thread before, i dont see how anyone could pts a healthy dog, it is so hard to do even to a sickly dog. we had a dalmatian years ago, had him from age 5 months to 13 years old....he was on meds for epilepsy for many years, our vet changed his meds a few times because he got worse...near the end he would have seizures maybe 3 times a week and they kept getting worse, the last one was bad...lost his bodily functions, .he didnt come outofi t, i called hubby at work, then the vet. hubby came right home, we took him in and the vet said he is not going to come out of this one. it was so hard to put him to sleep, sparkie was hubbies baby..he stayed withhim while the vet did it, i just couldnt do it.....we still shed tears for sparkie... he was a great family member :( and really missed :( |

i know someone who put their adorable schnauzer to sleep because she just didn\'t want to take care of it anymore :mad: If she didn\'t want him, I know others who would\'ve :( |
Many years ago, one of my aunts died, and her will stated that she wanted her pekinese put to sleep after she died because she believed that the dog would be miserable without her. My parents said that they had to do it because it was in the will, but I was horrified. I was a child at the time, and this bothered me for a really long time. It still does. There really should be laws passed against euthanizing a healthy animal for frivolous reasons. |
