Izzie neeeds to stop chewing!!! As some of you know, Izzie is almost 12 weeks old. I understand that puppies chew on anything & everything (including my brand new shoes!) :) That part, I'll get over. I also understand her chewing on the edges of the walls... The part that I don't get is the chewing of the WALL!!! She's chewing the paint off the middle of the wall. I live in a brand-new apartment, and I really don't want it looking "shabby" already. Plus, I'm worried that she's going to be swallowing these paint chips. Wouldn't it be nice if she would chew on one of the 5,000 toys she has instead? I've bought "Chew-Stop" by Pet Organics. It doesn't seem to be working at all. I tell her "NO" in a stern voice as soon as I see her doing anything "bad." Would Bitter Apple work for this little trouble maker? Vinegar? Anything else? I would like your advice, before I go paying more $$$ on a product that doesn't work... Thanks AGAIN! for your help! ;) |
Doesn't this phase suck?? She'll grow out of it eventually, I promise. In the meantime, I found that bully sticks are a GOD SEND. Seriously. I don't know what it is about these sticks, but I equate them to a binky for a baby. Also, I found that Bitter Apple works well from stopping them from chewing on stuff. Hang in there!! |
You can also try some hot pepper sauce -- mix some in with the vinegar. |

Ok, I know this sounds silly, but does your little Izzy hae plenty of things to chew on that she likes to chew? We have bully sticks ALL over the house. |
Hi there! Apparently they grow out of this stage..and sometimes into it! I've heard of pups that weren't agressive chewers that reached the "terrible two's" and started ruining furniture, all at around the 7 month mark! Bitter apple should work, but it only works when it's wet. I'm not sure about bully sticks for a puppy...my vet and a few pet food store owners have told me that you should save "hard" chews for when the adult teeth are in...for now stick to anything that's flexible. I bought a puppy kong for Tia, and she loves to get baby carrots out of it. I usually put the kong in the freezer so it's cold enough to sooth her gums. Tia also loves the small chicken or liver flavoured Nylabones. Again, if you're going to get a nylabone, make sure it's the flexible kind, and only let her have that toy when you can supervise her. People have different opinions on what toys puppies and adult yorkies should play with. At the end of the day, make sure that you check over the toy for cracks and/or splinters, so that they don't ingest anything that could be harmful. |
Mine have never been big chewers of things they shouldn't chew -- except for wicker, but for the couple of things they did start chewing on --- chair and table leg -- the bitter apple worked well. They really prefer their bullly sticks and flossies. Their trainer at Petsmart suggested Listerine ---the original flavor. She keeps some in a spray bottle and used it during one class for a puppy who kept chewing on his leash. She just sprayed some on the leash and it worked like a charm. At the next class the owner said she had used the Listerine at home and it worked on other things the puppy had been chewing on and he had completely stopped the leash chewing. Must taste even worse to dogs than humans. Might be worth a try. |
Mine chewed molding.. the wall.. the floor.. anything. When I couldn't be RIGHT there w/them.. they were in a big humungo crate :) It was THE only thing that worked.. I tried all the bad tasting sprays *no chew* stuff and none of it did a bit of good. |
I came hom last night and the wood molding on my shower was ripped to shreds. I was sooooooooooo mad! It's not just the puppy doing it. It's my 2 yr old starting it as well. |
My two year old does it as well. And he will chew the middle of the wall too. Sometimes I spray the obvious places with bitter apple but you can't spray all the walls! I too live in an apt and don't want him to cause too much damage. This is going to cost us $$$$! |
