I feel so bad giving such downer advice to Bradley Wieseha. You seem like you'd be a great Yorkie owner. But the fact that so many of us are urging you caution is a testament to the fact that expenses will come. You might consider health insurance like Michiko suggests. The main thing for me was having a credit card and a means to pay it off it the big expense came. Jack needed a $1,300 surgery weeks after we got him. I didn't have that kind of cash lying around, but I knew I could pay off the credit card if I had to. You're going to fall in love with whatever dog you get and you're going to pay whatever it takes to get them healthy. Good luck in your decision. And if you do get one, add a digital camera into the expense list because we're all gonna wanna see pictures. |
Well I didnt get it. Im kind of upset about it. I had everything worked out even down to a puppy sitter. But I just couldnt get the money. well I guess thats my final update here. Thanks for your help. |

just know that you will need to spend a little money every month on one. thats no one elses choice or knowledge but your own. and they need lots i mean lots of time and attention! |

We all pray for you that you will have your yorkie someday when situation is right and you are financially stable. Please don't be discouraged....... |
I can attest for the cost here. Since June 2007 we ran into lots of issues. Now we are seeing a specialist. LAst weeks visit for my two girls it was $1054.00. zI was definitely weak in the knees when they gave us our total when we checked out. We did complete blood work up on both and urinalysis on both with UPC check with the urine and 1 of my girls had to have a bile acid test. the comp blood work up was $265.00- urinalyis was $57.00 added upc for $113.50 vet visit was $53.00 bile acid test was $117.00 med waste charge of 9.45. that was for one dog $615.00! same thing for my other yorkie but minus the bat. $440.00- so yes indeed it does add up!!! We keep a budget- so I know exactly what we had to spend- 2007 total was $5423.00 (this also inc food and meds) and so far this year $1765.00. Ain't HAPPY about this at all. But who knew? and is it worth it??? for my little angels... YES!!! we are hoping things will get resolved and we will be on our way to spending LESS on vet bills and enjoying MORE of our healthy happy dogs. A specialist -YES- costs a lot! Unfortunately for us - we had a vet who was TEST HAPPY! and she took us for a nice ride. She is not our vet anymore! We only see the specialist now for everything. Spend lots yeah- but less in the end bc they know what to test for. it was a BIG learning experience for us. :-( When you own a yorkie you also need a great vet. especially experienced with the small breed. It makes me nervous because they are 10 and 9 yrs and things from this point are only going to progress. As they age more problems can arise and it really gets expensive quick. I do not think i will ever own another yorkie WITHOUT pet insurance that's for sure. |
I think the most expensive factor of owning a dog, not just Yorkies are vet bill and food (if you want to feed good food). I bought my Yorkie for $700which is a good price to many but in addition to that in the first month I spent about $800 more for vet check-ups, vaccines, diarrhea, food, grooming, toys etc. I think if you have a saving of about $1000 on top of your puppy price, you should be okay unless it is an emergency. Then from month to month, it is the food that is most expensive for mine. I feed him Evangers and Cannidae plus homecooked chicken, salmon etc costs about $80 a month in total. For grooming, I do my own grooming except for the cutting nails part so you just have to start out with a good clipper and a good video of how to groom. Shampoo and fur upkeep isn't so bad for me as I use Burgham senior shampoo, its not very expensive, it is very good and it lasts a long time for just one dog and I have a bottle of Emu Oil which is totally good for his keeping his fur soft and skin moisturized and that don't cost a lot and lasts forever. As for clothes, I think the basics that you need is a winter jacket if it gets cold where you stay and a few pajamas for the cold nights and maybe a tee or two. Won't cost a lot depending on where you buy them, maybe about $100 max for all. If you have the time and skill to make your own bed and clothes, even better. I made 2 beds for mine and 3 pieces of clothing. Whatever decision you make, good luck to you. I think if anything, you just have to worry most about vet care and good food. All others can be managed with good planning. Edit: Just saw your update. I am so sorry. I hope someday you will get your own Yorkie. I do agree they do need a lot of attention on top of the expenses especially the sucky ones like mine is. Puppy sitter is another expense as well. I have spent hundreds just on that alone. |

I know you can't always anticipate the cost of owning any dog, emergencies do happen. Check your budget and see if you could handle the normal expenses and try to save up a little for emergencies. This is a good price if the dogs are healthy and well socialized. I know how you can yearn for a little guy. Good luck making your decision...try to think outside the box and there may be an answer for you that you didn't expect. |
Awww. I just saw your post too. So sorry. There is a puppy out there for you....good luck. |
A good thing you can do is to contact your local vet, pick a few. Don't just call go in and talk to the front staff. Tell them you are looking for a yorkie to adopt. Sometimes they get yorkies in that have been abandoned, lost, neglected etc..If they don't have any at the time leave your name and contact info. Alot of small dogs end up at the vets cause that is the first place people take them when they are hurt or lost.. Alot of dogs never get claimed. The staff ( like me) will have to foster or find homes for them. It is worth a try..never give up keep calling if you don't hear back in awhile. I have experienced clients not being able to pay for the vet bill and end up leaving their dogs,,it is sad .but it happens. Pets in general are expensive, if this is meant to be, your yorkie wil find you!!! good luck. |
Follow your heart I have had a teacup for almost 13 years now. Yes, she's been to the vet a few times! I just got Maggie last May. I borrowed money and paid it back on my own because it was something I wanted to do. I bought her w/o hubby's approval....just brought her home. I have NEVER regretted it. Hubby is so much in love with her I am on my way to getting another!!! LOL I was always told "if you wait until you can afford to have kids (skin babies) you'll never have them." Maybe that's true maybe not....just follow your heart ....be realistic.....oh yeah and Maggie grew to be 4 lbs. Knock on wood no problems! Kirby , the teacup is 3lbs. What a difference a pound makes!!!! |
I didn't read all the replies but I will say that I haven't had any costly vet bills. Around where I live the vet doesn't charge very much. I haven't had any health problems with any of my dogs. Knock on wood ;) |
17/18? I didn't know your age! Wait ......you have PLENTY of time!;) |
Hope for the best I'm sorry you couldn't get a sweet Yorkie. I wish the best for you so that one day soon you can get one. You have to commit to your Yorkie to take the best care of him/her, so unfortunately you have to have enough money for shots, vet checks and sick visits. Your little, innocent Yorkie will depend on you to take care of him/her. Dogs are very innocent, like children--they depend on their parent(s) to take care of them. I hope it willl happen for you when you are ready! Yorkies are so sweet, and will love you back more than 100%:) |
That's a great price for a Yorkie if you can afford it. Is it at all possible to get in touch with a Yorkie Rescue? Are you a stay at home person? If so your chances are very good. This way the price would be less and you would know the yorkie has it's shots and a clean bill of health. Put the rest in a fund and add to it when you can for emergency/vet bills. Good luck to you. There are so many Yorkie's needing forever homes, it dosen't have to be a puppy from a breeder. |

I'm not sure if I trust this breeder's reasoning for selling the pups because she is older and unable to do the bending anymore. That is something that didn't happen overnight, so why did she breed for these puppies, knowing she couldn't handle it? I agree with what some of the others said. Take your time and save the money, and the right puppy will come along. Also try to save extra for the vet costs. Puppies have alot of vet costs in the first year, and there's always a chance they might get sick. I waited years for my yorkies because I wanted to wait until my kids were grown. Now I have two and they were both definitely worth the wait!!! Try to be patient. :) |
I know how you feel, I wanted a Yorkie for a long time. I just got my Izzie after 6yrs of waiting. I wanted Tobey to have a friend. Its not worth it to get into debt, unless the breeder is willing to wait. When you are suppose to have your baby you will get one. Don't get discourage, good things always come for those who wait.:) |

I have always believed that good things happen to those who wait and if you just stay positive, something will come your way. Now please send me a email, I need to talk to you. yougetthesmiles@yahoo.com |

Thats good that shes had all her shots, a little young. But remember, vet bills don't include just shots. I have had to take my two in for multiple reasons, just because I thought something was wrong, and ended up spendingg $200 or more. So please save your money until you have enough to pay for the dog, and have atleast $1k saved JUST for vets. Not including food. This is a life just like a human, please don't rush just because you want a dog! |

I have a bank account set up for the doggies (for the vet really). Each visit is $50 PLUS shots and meds. And then there is the tooth cleaning. YIKES!!!! but necessary. These are high maintenance lovable babies and need all the love and care we can give them. They deserve that. You really make a pldge to care for them when you bring them into your home. I decided to put money in the bank each time I got the urge to buy more clothes for them. They actually eat their clothes off, so I decided to not bother. Aren't they just cute nekkid???? |

Sorry it took me so long to update this thread. I eventually did get my yorkie. :) His name in Mojo, I got him about a year ago on March 8th. I was at work and saw an ad in the paper for a 10 wk old AKC male yorkie for $300 and immediatly called the number. I knew the chances of it turning out well were slim but i figured i had nothing to lose. Well i called her and she said that she had just gotten home from work and that she would hold him till i got off work so i could see him. I literally sped to her house as soon as i got off and soon after arriving was met by a precious lil yorkie pup. He was alert and playing and was absolutely beautiful. I asked her A LOT of questions, about medical history, registration, about his behavior and temperment. and I also asked her why she was selling him for only 300. She said that she really didnt want to, she used to breed them and after this last litter she decided to stop and keep one puppy. But she said after a few weeks it was hard to keep up the care he needed. (shes an older woman) She said she wasnt really looking to make a profit, she just wanted him to go to a good home and a loving family. She also sold his mom and dad..... Anyways... I brought him home and for the first few weeks i slept on the floor next to his crate with my fingers through the wires and hed fall asleep licking my hand. I love my baby so much and he is my spoiled little boy. :p and now he sleeps curled up next to me every single night (and for a little dog he takes up a lot of room) lol. As far as vet bills... the most ive paid at the vet at one time was i think 58 dollars.... but all together is definately been under 200. Yes im only 18 (will be 19 soon) and yes im still in college (i have 8 more years). Im also getting married in May to someone who loves my dog almost as much as i do. :D Thank you guys for all your comments, advice and support. Without you YorkieTalkers I probably wouldnt have my mojo. |
:D Congrats!!! Glad it all worked out |
I love happy endings. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding, also. |
That is wondeful! So happy for you and Mojo. My daughter put her Yorkie's crate on her bedside table and they fell asleep with her fingers through the bars too. Very sweet. |
