Flooring for puppy room - need sugestions please! Ok, we are buying the flooring this weekend and I need suggestions. I need the most strongest, puppy proof flooring there is! So far we are going with a wood laminate (fake wood) - its seems indescructable. Any suggestions???? No cement or tile. Its in our lower level...(basement) so we've put in a wood sub floor. THANKS!!! |
My opinions on flooring I used to have carpet through out my house. Now, I have wood floors (thanks to Katrina). If I had to do it all over again, I'd definitely put carpet back in the rooms that my little one plays in the most. Sometimes he gets so excited running, that his little legs can slip out from under him. I am always trying to get him to slow down because I'm scared he'll break something. :( |
Is this for the inside of a house...like a living area? If not, what I like to use is the padding that's often put underneath the bedding of a stall. It's a shock absorbing pad that has antimicrobials in it. It has super traction and if an accident is had on it, no worries. It's a wash and wear material. You can use pretty much any chemical on it and it can even be in direct sunlight w/o worry. Just my two cents. |
I have laminate in my kitchen, halls breakfast area and if water sits on it for a little while it can buckle. I had a plant overflow and didn't see it right away the floor warped and buckled. |

We have a "puppy land" in our new house..a space about 8x9' off our bedroom. It has a wood floor, and I didn't want it ruined with pee stains or scratches, so being the sneaky commercial interior designer that I am, I ordered a bunch of commercial grade carpet tile samples. (8 in all) They are EACH 3' by 3' square, padded well, stain-resistant and have moisture backing. I ordered a couple of the new, contemporary funky patterns and mixed and matched them together. We cut them to fit with a utility knife, and they fit like a glove! I have gotten many compliments on our "awesome rug"--little do they know I designed it myself and it was FREE. It took 8 samples in all to do the whole area. This gives the puppies a space of their own that is nice and padded, easily cleanable, moisture proof, and when it gets too dirty, I'll toss that tile and replace it with a new one! These worked really great-Milli has accidents sometimes, and the pee just FLOATS on top of the carpet-won't even sink in, it just wipes right up! If you know a commercial designer or consultant, or visit carpet showroom in your area, you might be able to score some carpet tiles like this! Good luck! |
I would go with those vinyle (sp) tiles. or a laminate that is not the wood laminate. |
If puppies are going to be on any floor, then I don't suggest carpet or you will never get them trained. They will always go on the carpet. I'd suggest Pergo. I've seen this in Vets. offices and at a couple Dr. offices. It always looks brand new. It's more sanitary too. |
wood laminate does not do well with water, any sitting of water and the edges will buckle and puff up. plus it is hard to make it look clean. |
post not showing up I know I posted on this thread and a couple others but my posts aren't showing up for some reason. Anyway, after i read all the negative stuff about hardwood, laminate and tile, in a thread i started about this time last year, I decided to go with a high grade vinyl. it looks like wood and most people think it is. |
Then Pergo would be the best choice. It isn't wood or even wood laminate. |

This is a room that the puppys are going to be raised in and pee pad trained in...so NO carpet of any sort can be used. Whats the difference between pergo and laminate? I thought they were the same???? Fake wood? I'm not sure??? But no....any type of real wood wouldn't work as they are going to pee on it for sure. The cheap linolium piece I have to cover my carpet right now they have chewed holes, ripped and are constantly digging on it and pulling on it...so I had thought linoilium was not strong enough? I just don't know and we are going shopping tomorrow! I also really don't want to spend and arm and a lef but I need quality. Its a 13 x 12 room. |
Linoleum should be strong enough. Remember, it is glued down so it would be hard for the furkids to destroy. Have you considered ceramic floor tile? |
