yorkie or maltese? Hey guys! I am absolutely in love with the yorkie, but I hear they are not as laid back as the maltese. We'd like a dog that is easy going and can get along with other people and other dogs - and from what I've read and heard, a maltese fits that picture better. Any arguments on that from experienced yorkie and maltese owners? Thank you! |
Oh..and also their health issues - i've heard the maltese has less health problems than the yorkie is this really true? |
I think it just all depends on the dog. My yorkies are way more laid back than my husband's brother's maltese. His maltese is very hyper and also a big barker and my yorkies aren't. Of course I've read where others had yorkies that were barkers. I think both breeds seem to get along well with people and other animals. Seems they have alot of the same health issues also. Again, it just all depends on the dog but I do love my yorkies :) |
My Maltese is much more hyper than either of my Yorkies too! And he is a barker SUPREME where my Yorkies don't bark much at all. I really do think it depends on the dog but I don't think I would get another Maltese again. They are beautiful dogs for sure but I like the temperment of my Yorkies better. Good luck on you decision. |
My Maltese Misha is much more laid back. She'll sleep in with me if I could. Piper & Max, they're up at 6 every morning ready to go, racing up & down. As for health issues, I think it depends on the dog. Misha is very healthy, as where Max is to young yet to really know. Piper our mix (maltese & yorkie) I think she will be the one that has more health issues. I also think it is because of the breeder. Misha has more staining around her eyes. Max, his eyes always water, but can't see staining because of color. If you check out maltese sites, there are alot of health issues also. So it just depends on getting a good breeder. Good luck |
My maltese is the couch potato while my yorkie is the "life of the party"! It's true....each dog is different! |
I have 3 yorkies. The male is a barker. Drives me nutz. One female is 6 months old. She barks some, but is adorable. The 2 year old is very mellow. 3-1/2 lbs. My son's girlfriend has a maltese. Adorable, but so hyper. He doesn't stay still for a minute. I think it depends on the dog. I love them all. Good luck in your decision. Molliemae, Cody and Abbi's Mom Jan |
I had a maltese before I got Lacy and while she was a beautiful dog, she was much harder to groom and needed to be bathed and brushed way more often, she was pretty layed back but I guess it depends on the dog...each has their own personality and Lacy is pretty laid back.. Stacey:animal-pa |

FOr health problems, they have a real problem with liver shunt in the breed moreso than the Yorkies although if people keep breeding Yorkies without knowledge of liver shunt in previous generations, the Yorkie is not going to be far behind Maltese with Liver shunt issues. Maltese as with any toy breed can also have the same knee problems etc. Their are several pages of info on this page http://www.barkbytes.com/direct/maltse.htm |
They both have health issues, but the most important thing is buying from a REPUTABLE breeder. Generally speaking, maltese are said to be more laid back than yorkies, I also believe it depends on the individual dog as far as laid back or hyper. Pick the breed that you think would best suit you, and tell the breeder what kind of personality you are looking for, and they should be able to match you to the puppy that best fits you and your family. I have both a yorkie and a maltese and love both breeds :) |
