brushing teeth.. please help me PLEASE give me some sort of technique or trick to brush gizmos teeth.. he is sooo hard to brush hair or even pet without nipping at me! He will NOT let me brush his teeth thats for sure but I need to do it right? He is 13 weeks and I want to start now so he can get used to it.. but he hates any type of groomin:( |
Your smart to start early. That is key I believe to getting them use to it. Purchase a baby toothbrush from the grocery store. Put him on your lap facing sideways. Open his lip and start brushing his teeth. I did not open Bud's mouth until he was use to the brush touching his teeth. After about a week I opened his mouth and brushed his teeth. I gave him a Brite White dental treat afterwards. It is all natural and has parsley in it for the breath. Also check into petzlife gel or spray. It is safe and everyone uses it here. It keeps the tartar in check before it has a chance to build up. Good luck Carol & Buddy |

You can get them at Petsmart. It is a green box with a dog on the cover smiling showing off his teeth. If he knows he is getting a treat after the brushing he may just sit. Being consistant is important. Don't let him have his way. Be firm and keep trying alittle at a time each day until he knows he is not going to be hurt but treated. They are so smart these little ones. Carol & Buddy |
at this age dont use a brush, just use your finger to get him used to the feeling of having something in his mouth ( it might take a while ) after that use a gauze and then when he is 4 or 5 months old use a baby tooth brush. |
Gosh I had this exact same problem with Zoe, First, I suggest you trying fingerbrushes to start off with, although I find them rather large for the tiny dogs. Zoe fused and fused and would even bite down on my fingers. Put your baby on your lap, on his back and get them used to the toothbrush in their mouth. It used to take me 30 min to brush her teeth because of all the fighting involved and the resistance. Now, it is like night and day, she doesn't like it but tolerates it and we are done in 2 minutes! Keep at it until they get used to it. I personally like buying plain baby/kids tooth brushes at walmart for about $3 rather than a fancy pet toothbrush. I look for the softest bristles. If you must, you might need assistance, one person holds their mouth open while the other brushes. Also, as suggested, treat them and rave and make a big deal if he has a good session. Same with the brushing, they will get used to it. Also, as suggested above, try petzlife, it's an awesome product, helps with bad breath, keeps the teeth white, and will for sure prevent tartar. We have a really good package deal at www.sassypup.net The great thing is they carry a spray that helps, or if at the end, if your dog does not and will not tolerate brushing, they have suggestions to either put the gel in their toy to chew on, place it on their lip to lick and distribute in their mouth, or mix it with a favorite item like peanut butter. |
Put some doggie toothpaste on a baby toothbrush and let him play with it -- he will probable end up sitting down and chewing on the toothbrush bristles and clean his own teeth. |
Try to wrap Gizmo in a large bath towel, and have someone hold him so you'll have two hands to clean his teeth. You can get dog toothpaste at Petsmart and Petco (you should never use human toothpaste on a pet). Most dog toothpastes come flavored with meat or chicken. Pups just love this and I haven't had one yet that didn't want the brush in his mouth with this on it! Make sure to get the back teeth well, as that is where there is the most plaque buildup. During and after your teeth brushing, give Gizmo loads of praise. He will get use to it eventually and hopefully you'll get to the point when you won't have to wrap him, or require any help with him. There are HUGE benefits to teeth cleaning, especially for Yorkies. Not to mention getting sweet kisses from them......Good Luck! |
I cheat! I just got my old toothbrush, put the doggie toothpaste on it and let them brush their own teeth! The will gnaw on the brush until I take it away and beg for it back. I hope they are doing a good job brushing! |
