Doesn't answer to his name My year-old little monster often does not answer to his name. I know that he HAS to know his name by now -- I say it about 1,000 times a day. But, if I say his name, instead of coming to see what I'm talking about, he just ignores me. Then, sometimes, I'll say "Archie" or "Archibald" and he will turn his little peanut head to look at me! Most of the time he just keeps doing what he's doing. Does anyone else have this problem? Or is my Yorkie a candidate for the "short bus?" :embarasse |
He might be associating it with nagging...try re-teaching him his name. Take him away from distractions. Then say his name, if he looks up, then praise him and give him a treat...then slowly introduce more distractions. Maybe he just thinks that his name means he's in trouble, or he has to leave the fun stuff he's doing to see what mommy wants. Good luck :) |
LOL!!!! Dont mean to laugh, but mine do the same thing!! Its called "selective hearing"!!!! I think most animals as well as skin kids do the same thing. |
also try saying it in a 'pleasant' tone. I learned tones mean an awlful lot from our trainer. high pitched pleasant when you are pleased with them, and the 'mommy' voice when you are displeased or trying to be assertive with them. She says NEVER raise your voice or associate things like a come command to do something they don't like or in a bad tone. Eg. don't say come to do things they hate, instead say come, hug and kiss them so they associate it with a positive thing, then do what you need to do. |

you know a thought just came into my head... could it be he has problems with his hearing????? i hope im wrong, just a thought if hes not responding to you |
I'm sure Archie knows his name but is choosing to ignore it. H emight be ignoring it because you do say his name so often. Maybe try making him answering to his name special! Give him a treat or praise him every time you say his name and he comes to you. If you have someone you could practice with, this is good too...plus he'll get a bit of exercies runnning aback and forth between the two of you. This is how my husband and I taught Tia her name (although there are many days it seems she needs a refresher lesson!) |
Definitely sounds like the selective hearing just described. In my house, we call it a "random cat gene" since cats so love to ignore you when you want them to do something. |

Kiki and Mazie KNOW their names....but definitely consider it their OPTION whether or not to actually get up and cross the room when I call them! :D |
its okay my husband hasn't learned his name yet either,,,,, and he has never been on the short bus... but it is selective hearing,..., I usually say it is a singing tone,...... I know you can't hear me but I say SO So So phia.,,,,. so so so phia.... ( for those of you still taking the short bus , that is sophie) or Oliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii ver and they knock each 0ther down getting to me .., |
Maggie knows her name for sure. I can just say maggie and she looks at me and if I say maggie, come here. she comes, except when she dont want to. You can tell the difference. if she is outside barking at something i call her and most times she will look at me but If I say come here then she keeps barking if she wants to. So I feel sure your pup knows its name by now. Maggie is 8 months. yours just probably ignores what he wants to. I hope thats the case anyway. goodluck finding out. when its just you and him and he is just laying there looking bored, call his name and see if he will even look at you. If he does then, you'll know he DOES know his name. |
its the thing to do... Hopey NEVER comes when you call her but she will take a look... hehe |

Our baby Isis doesn't like her name. In fact I think she just plain ignores me when we call her by name, which is often. She likes to be called "baby".... I think she is very spoiled..... |
