What size of crate do you have? Our vet recommended a plastic crate that would be suitable for an 8 pound cat or dog. At petsmart, I found one for 10 ppound cat or dog. On it's label it lists a few small breed dogs, including yorkies, that the size is suitable for. My husband thinks it's too small. Tia has enough room to stand and turn around. I told my husband that it may seem cramped for now during crate training, but that she's cozy...and if she's crying it's because she's lonely, not cramped. Still, should we have bought a bigger crate? What size do you use? |
That size is fine for a puppy. We started with that size, and just moved up to the next size at about 5months. You don't want it too big because if there is enough room, they will soil their crate. They like to not have to sit it their messes, so if it is big enough for them and the mess, they are more likely to make one. hth :) |
I think we have the exact same crate you're describing for our new puppy, and when we got it we, too, thought it seemed too small, but Edie loves it--she'll go in there to nap sometimes during the day, of her own accord! (She loves small spaces in general, though--she loves to smush down in between cushions, laps, whatever.) We've been thinking about upgrading to something slightly bigger now that she's housetrained and has grown (she's 5 months old), but the crate has worked perfectly so far. |
Actually, that is all the room any dog needs in a crate. They need just enough room to stand, turn around, and lie down. Our huge dogs and our little dogs always have had crates with just that amount of room. Being den animals they need a confined space when they need their "alone time". When we did have our crates out for our dogs ( until they were between 2-3) they went in them often on their own . Natalie |
4 Attachment(s) is she potty trained??? layla just "graduated" to her big girl crate.. she used ot be in the small one you are discribing but for her it was just too cramped (i had a plush pillow on the bottom so it made it hard for her to stand up) last week we put her in her big girl crate (the next size up) and she loves it. it is way too big for her so i stuffed pillows in the back to make it the size that i want.. here are some pictures. but all this "Extra" room will only work if she is potty trained and can hold it. |
OMG, I love that first picture of Layla. She looks so tiny under that big head of hair! That crate sure looks cozy with all those fluffy blankies! :) |
