So I came home to a HUGE hole in the carpet!?!? So a couple weeks ago we came home from classes to find a 6x4 hole in the carpet of our apt that we RENT.... The kiddos (Bentley 1 YR Zoey 6 months) are left in our bedroom while we are gone (The most they are ever left is 3 hours and thats only on Monday and Friday). The problem is Zoey has all the sudden started this digging thing (trying to get to her momma :D ) so under my door she dug. So we replaced that carpet (we're not supposed to have pets, but I wasn't giving my Yorkies up... and other people have pets here too!) and put a super heavy metal sheet over the top of where we replaced. On top of that we bought a no slip rug, and then to be sure we put a towel or a blanket over the top of that to cover more area. Well we came back today and she (well at least I'm 99% sure it's her) had dug the towel through and chewed holes all out of the rug I bought...  I know this is sooo long, but I don't know what to do?!? It hasn't always been like this, but when they know we are leaving the shaking begins. It's horrible. They get lots of walks/play time/attention, toys, water, entertainment (tv), fleece blanket, their favorite bed, and they also have down blankets that they LOVE that are in there. The room isn't small, and we'ver never left them in there for long long periods of time, just about 3 hours. Any ideas? Suggestions?? |
Try Bitter Apple spray!! Hopefully the nasty taste will deter her from chewing!! Good luck! :D |

she might feel more safe if she was in a crate with one of you shirts or just try leaving one of your shirts out for her to smell |
I would try an ex-pen or crate that way you know they aren't getting into anything and are safe. |

We actually do leave shirts that smell like us everyday we both leave one. When we're at my parents and she has full run to the house as does Bentley and my Yorkie at my parents. She's fine there other than a few paper shreds. |

I would put them in an x-pen and put a plastic tray under the x-pen...something plastic that she cannot dig through. |
how about giving her a bully stick to keep her busy |
And try leaving the radio and/or TV on when you leave to drown out background noise from outside. |

We leave the TV on for them while we are gone. |

I have to be careful they seem to have sensitive stomachs... Lots of treats make them throw up. Peanut butter makes them sick as does the stuff you can put in the Kong's... Gosh, my dogs are picky! I had a hard time finding dog food for them ... But finally me and the vet found the perfect brand... but we (meaning the vet and I) stay in contact about treats and things. I have to keep track of everything that they can't keep down... I feel like the only one with these issues.... :( |
The bitter apple spray works pretty good. |
Well, you aren't going to keep them from digging up the floor unless you put something under them and on top of the carpet that they cannot dig into, like something hard & plastic. |
Are you shutting the door to your bedroom while they are in there? Maybe a baby gate would be a better choice so they can see out. |

If it's only 3 hours, why not just get a crate for each of them and keep them in the crates? |
OK, I just saw where you said you almost lost an apartment due to the crate. What do you mean by that? How did the crate not work? Do you mean she cried in it? You might need to work on it little by litte. |

Bentley that is a year has never been a problem, and we never ever had to crate him. When we got her we found out really quick that they were total opposites, so we did try the crate. She barked and cried and barked.... Non-stop... We lost a $900 deposit (which really sucks when your a college student!)Then she chewed holes in the sides of the crate (where the air holes are... but now they are like escape hole size:D ) So we bought a totally wire one, and she about killed herself trying to get out. So after almost 2 months of this we just gave up, and things have been ok... Until this started. |

I think that I just frustrate myself more thinking about it... :thumbdown |
