Fee Or Puppy????? One of the ladies at our vet has a girl yorkie and she wants to breed her with my little guy. Here's the question, do you take money or do you pick a new puppy? What would you do? I dont really know that my little boy is old enough yet he is only 10 months old. He sure acts like he can. lol. I just don't know what to do. You all always have such good advice and I really need it right now. |
There is more than just age to consider. Pedigrees? What is her weight? his? Why are you wanting to breed? The only reason to breed is to improve the breed. Your female can die. You're putting the cart before the horse here--whether you should take a puppy or $$. You've got a lot of questions to think about...do a search on this forum on breeding. |
I would question her breeding pratices, why is she wanting to breed her female with your male? If she is a breeder she should have a stud already and one that fits closely to the breed standards. And not want to just find a cute male to use as stud. Backyard breeder sounds like to me. I wouldnt stud him out! JMO |
First, you need to decide if he should be bred. He should have his patellas checked, liver shunt tested and have a brucellosis test as should the female have all the same tests done. Then you have pedigrees to study and do research on your male's and her females's line. You don't want them pass down a genetic health problem to their puppies. It takes alot of reasearch and time to breed, you can't just stick two dogs together and hope everything turns out alright. To answer your question, it is best to ask for a stud fee rather than pick of the litter. |
From the sounds of it, neither. :) |
It really depends on what you want to do...take the stud fee and have it over and done with or take the pick of the litter to keep or sell...if you want to sell it, it might be more of a hassle but if you are willing to keep a puppy around until it sells then go that way...it just depends on what you want.. Welcome to YT by the way!! Dawn |
If it were me I would want the pick of the litter, but to keep the puppy so it can grow up with its dad. That is what I am one day hoping to do with Ludo ... when I know a little bit more and he is ready and I am sure he is acceptable to breed. |

Of course the puppies are going to stay with their parents until they are ready to leave. I dont understand what you are saying? |

Anyways I would atleast give a fee to make him mate with the girl because it is your dog. I would keep some puppies or split half the money when the puppies are ready to leave. |
What have you and her talked or agreed on? I don't think that many breeders agree to let you have pick of the litter from what I have read.........he isn't even a proven stud. I sense, the other lady has no clue what she is getting into and probably shouldn't be thinking about breeding  |
I would think hard and long if you want to breed. It really is a lot of work for you, and the dog. Also, as many have said before why do you want to breed? Will it be a breeding to better the breed. I was a pit bull breeder for years, and let me tell you it was no picnic. Not only is it hard to take care of the puppies, it's expensive. Then you have to go through interviewing people to see you feel comfortable with them or not. I stopped, because it was to hard on me, and my girls, and when you go to the SPCA, and see all those unwanted dogs it makes you so sad. |
Thank you all for your help. I have decided not to let her used my little guy. And if someday I do decide I will remember all of your responses. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. |
