I desperatly need advice from Yorkie owners PLEASE!!!
 

We have been searching for a Yorkie for about 10 months. I had a deposit down on one litter but there wasnt a female born so we are getting our deposit down. I found a 6 month old Yorkie that needs a home and we went to meet her. We also took our 10 month old mini schnauzer to make sure it would all work out. Well Lilly (the yorkie) went crazy when she say Emrick (our schnauzer) she started barking uncontrollably!!!! So we decided to think about it. I have been keeping in touch with the women and she still hasnt found a home for her. I LOVE her she is soooo sweet and loves kids which I often have kids around and also have a 9 yr old but im worried about the dog issue. Do you think she will just get used to Emrick and other dogs? Or do you think its hopeless? We have decided to make a written aggrement were I take her home for a weekend and try to see what happens. Both dogs will be safe I have been reading up on how to introduce them safely, but I wanted your input since you all have yorkies. Another thing she is 6 months old not a tiny pup do I still have to worry about the hypoglacemia? I know they get low blood sugar when they are stressed but I didnt know if I should still worry at that age? And what is a good age to spay??? THANK YOU so much im sorry its so long!!!

The Yorkie was defending her home..I would try it..may take longer then a weekend to adjust...I find Schnauzers more reasonable and will take more off a little dog...I wouldn't be concerned about low sugar at her age and size.

She is at a good age to spay now, maybe wait another month or so to see if she will need any retained puppy teeth removed. That way you don't have to have her put under twice. Just don't wait too long because you don't want her to go into heat. The barking issue may be nothing and improve or it could indicate a problem. Did she ever calm down? Why are they placing her at 6 months? Is she the lady that bred her or a person that bought her and isn't keeping her? Is she placing her because of problems with her behavior? You shouldn't have to worry about the hypoglycemia at her age unless she is super itty bitty. Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks for your replies. The women is placing her because she bought her for her daughter and she said the novelty wore off and her daughter dosent spend the time and work on her anymore so she wants to find her a loving home. Yes lilly did calm down when we put emrick in the car where she couldnt see him LOL! She wasnt defending her territory I dont think because we meet at a park to make it easier. She wasnt Yappy with people at the park but definetly at Emrick. i think I will ask the women if we can have her for a week on the contract so i can take her to the vet and make sure theres nothing wrong with her also. Thanks for your input!!!

trial run would be great. Hope it works out for you. Yorkies are wonderful little dogs.

According to a Yorkie, they do own the park..and everything else in the world! LOL

For 22 years all my dogs have been rescues personally I wouldn't take a dog that was even remotely not going to get on with my present dogs. The risk is just too great and the only real losers will be the dogs :(

A week may not be enough . Peoples ask everythings from a dog . Ex : A pup arrive home , he must absolutely be potty trained , don't chew on thing , be use to others dogs , peoples and children . A dog must have the time to adjust to environment . I have a thirteen years old yorkie and recently , I have had the chance to add a 1 year old . They didn't adjusted in the hour following the arrival . It took time .

When we first got Choppi he was 4 months old. We intro'd him to Pochi (his full brother from a prev litter) and had no problems. Meeju our Mini Schnauzer is 4 yrs old and gets a little excited. So we postponed their meeting for a couple of days til he got use to his new home. Well I was holding Choppi on my bed when he first met Meeju and she came running in all excited and tried to jump up on the bed. I put my hand out to calm her and stop her from jumping up on the bed and he saw what I did and went crazy!! He started barking at her, showing his teeth and trying to nip her which made her even more curious. She just wanted to sniff him and the closer she got the more he went crazy trying to attack her. He was trying to protect me thinking she was trying to hurt me. Mind you, she's 7x his size, but that didn't stop him from trying to protect me. It took him a few days maybe a week to realize she wasn't going to go away and that she isnt' trying to harm him or me. They get along perfectly now. He still does that to new pet he doesn't know or anyone he thinks is trying to hurt me. He's very protective. He was like that with Daisy when we first got her. It took him a few days to realize she was here to stay too. We kept a very close eye on him because she was a baby. He never hurt her but we kept an eye to make sure. He was like that with my sister's dog when I watched her when she went on vacation. It took him over a week warm up to her but I think that was only cause she wasn't around our house very often.

As far as hypoglycemia is concerned, as long as he's eating and drinking regularly, I don't think you have to worry. If any, it would be within the first couple weeks of getting him that you may have to watch out for that just cause it's a new environment and adjustments, etc.

As far as spaying goes, every vet has their own opinion. My vet doesn't like to do it on pets that are younger than 6 months. Especially with size and health factors come into play with it. Your vet should tell you what they think the right time is for the specific pet.

Do you live close enough to this lady to have a few playdates before you bring her home? May be you could see how everything goes on neutral ground. I love the name 'Emrick' that is so neat.

After introducing my Bo, now 6 months old into our household where my 8 year old Schnauzer had ruled for so long, I can definately tell you that it can work. For the first couple of months I thought I had made a terrible mistake. Woody has bad allergies and health issues. I've always wanted a Yorkie and we hoped Bo would be a companion for Woody and take his mind off his own issues. At first Bo made Woody a nervous wreck! Now, they are inseparable. It's so fun to watch them play.
My concern with your question is with your nine year old son. Is he mature enough and gentle enough to trust around a toy dog? Are his friends? Some breeders don't sell to anyone with a child under 12 or 13. My son was 11 when we got Bo and there were many many times when I had to correct his behavior. Still have to tell him and my daughter not to jump and run through the house. And she's 18!
After having experience with 2 Schnauzers I can tell you that Yorkies are a whole different story. Schnauzers are stocky. Yorkies are fragile, even Bo who is about 7 pounds at 6 1/2 months.

Thanks~ Emrick is a german name thats why I picked it for him!! yes we live close enough for us to meet but the women has no time thats why she is getting rid of lilly! Yes my 9 yr old.. 10 in july is very gentle and considerate with animals shes been around them all her life im not at all worried about her. Thanks girls!
