UPdate on Penny some great and some terrible news Penny and I showed at the Ladie's Kennel Club in Old Brookville Long Island. I promised to write about Penny's showing and was prepared to do so. In fact, she took Best of Breed today and picked up another point towards her championship. Something was bothering her eye during the day and I assumed it was a corneal scratch - something she has done to herself so many times that it does not cause me to panic (she has big eyes and with the long coat, if I don't watch her like a hawk, she scratches herself). This time, I was mistaken. By evening, I could tell something was VERY wrong. Took her to the emergency room and they did a stain test on her. She has a corneal ulcer! I've dealt with this one before with another dog, but I know that, beleive that it will heal, there is another big concern, a scar on her eye will end her show career. Please pray for us. |
i am soo sorry to hear this. i will pray for you and your doggie. |
How horrible! I hope that she will be okay with very limited damage. :( |
I really hope Penny will be ok soon , It so sad to have a little one sick . Congratulations for the Best Of Breed win . |
Oh Yorkipower, I'm so sorry to hear about Penny's eye. I wonder if it's very painful for her. Bless her heart. I was thrilled to see that she had won best of breed though. I'll pray for a smooth and speedy recovery. Keep us posted on how she is. Bo sends gentle puppy kisses! |
I hope Penny recovers fully from this ulcer. So I take it a scar on her eye or around the eye would be very noticeable and thus makes her unperfect in the eyes of judges? |
Thanks guys. Mom is taking Penny to a canine opthamologist on Monday so we'll have a better idea of how deep it is and what the prognosis will be. What I'm racking my brain is what did I use or what did I do that caused this to happen? The vet said it looked like something had been splashed in her eye. My best guess is the "Eye Envy" I use on her but I honestly can't tell. It's very upsetting. We were supposed to go to the Classic Toy Dog Show in Fitchburg next week. There are 22 Yorkies competinig on Saturday alone - a five point major. We will probably have to scratch but that's the least of our concerns right now. I am going to try to keep it all out of my mind for the rest of the weekend. I am sorry I don't feel up to writing more about Penny's showing right now. Hoepfully, I'll have good news on Monday. IN ther interim, hope this wil suffice: http://www.webpagetutor.com/mightymi...topic.php?t=45 |
I am so sorry to hear about Penny . I really hope she will be better soon . Zsa Zsa and Jade are sending her lots of get well kisses and hugs . |
Congrats on the Best of Breed! I am so sorry about her eye! I hope and will pray it heals without any scarring and that her eye is okay. Poor little thing must be hurting. |
Awww, I'm so sorry to hear about Penny's eye. I am sure it will be all better soon and you won't have anything to worry about! Hugs and kisses from Fred and I. And, please update us on how things go |
I am sorry to hear this news. My yorkie ran thu the woods and scaratched his eye with a branch or briar. He ended up with a melting ulcer.I took him to a specialist and he did a great job, he said there may be a small gray scar but there ended up being no scar at all, a slight dent in the cornea if you look at him from the side, thats all. no one looking at him straight on can see any scar at all. Usually the ulcer heals with antibiotic drops and no problems but that is the worst case scenario. I am sure your yorkie will be fine but you are doing the right thing taking her to a specialist early on. Good luck with it!! BTW, what is eye envy? |
Oh shoot - poor Penny - I hope you can treat it with minimal scarring and maybe she'll be ok ? Congrats on the show ! |
Congradulations on winning Best Of Breed! I will keep you in my prayers. Hopefully she can have a quick recovery. |
so sorry What a great win!!! BUT don't throw the toweling just yet...I had that happen to a Yorkie also. Vet had to stitch her eye lid shut to heal...the ulcer left a white dot on the cornea and it could be seen if you looked close. I asked a number of people could a Yorkie be shown with the scar and they said..SURE. Many judges will overlook it..some will ask and you tell them it was an injury..others will never see it. I saw a Serbian Husky shown with a piece of his ear gone..it was a fight and the judges did not fault an accident. Good luck |
Oh geez, I guess I should add that my yorkie had surgery, they did not stitch his eye closed but instead stitched the inner eyelid across the eye. It was frightening looking for a couple months! And when I was worried about scarring he said IF he did get the gray scar it could be removed. I am sure yours will not come to all of this tho. I still want to know what eye envy is- Pat? |
lid You are right..it is the inner lid they stitch shut..it did take about a month. |
Big congratulations on Penny's win! It so sad that she's got that on her eye. What makes me mad to even think that it should stop her from going on with her showing and winning. I bet you it won't! I hope that she'll get better fast, and I want to thank you for the link on explaining the point system to win...Theresa & The Boys :aimeeyork |

Section 8. A dog which is blind, deaf, castrated, spayed, or which has been changed in appearance by artificial means except as specified in the standard for its breed, or a male which does not have two normal testicles normally located in the scrotum, may not compete at any show and will be disqualified except that a castrated male may be entered as Stud Dog in the Stud Dog Class and a spayed bitch may be entered as Brood Bitch in the Brood Bitch Class. A dog will not be considered to have been changed by artificial means because of removal of dewclaws or docking of tail if it is of a breed in which such removal or docking is a regularly approved practice which is not contrary to the standard. Neutered dogs and spayed bitches would be allowed to compete in Veterans Classes only at independent specialties and/or those all-breed shows which do not offer any competitive classes beyond Best of Breed. When a judge finds any of these conditions in any dog he is judging, he shall disqualify the dog marking his book "Disqualified" and stating the reason. He shall not obtain the opinion of the show veterinarian. When a dog has been disqualified at a show as being blind, deaf, castrated, spayed or changed in appearance by artificial means except as specified in the standard for its breed, any awards taken by such dog at that show shall be canceled by The American Kennel Club and the dog may not again compete unless and until, following application by the owner to The American Kennel Club, that owner has received official notification from The American Kennel Club that the dog's show eligibility has been reinstated. When a dog has been disqualified under the standard for its breed, or when a male has been disqualified as not having two normal testicles normally located in the scrotum on three separate occasions, by three different judges, such dog may not again be shown. When a dog has been so disqualified at a show, any awards taken by the dog at that show shall be canceled by The American Kennel Club. Are you sure they wont consider a scar an alteration or an injury subject to disqualification? I think there was a question about whatis Eye Envy? Here's the link: www.eyeenvy.com It's a product dog show people use to remove eye stains from the under eye area. |
Akc "Changed in appearance by artifical means" is not an injury...point out the word injury to me..I will go back and read it word by word. I have seen large breeds with scars on the skin, if a dog lost a toe in an injury it could compete..thse are not artifical altering..they are normal dog stuff. She will not be blind I am sure..infact my girls white dot was so hard to see. |
Thanks Yorkierose. I really appreciate it. |
Penny Is Going To Be Ok! Mom just called me with the good news! It's not deep and she should be healed in about two weeks. Well, that means we miss two five point majors in between but heck, I'll gladly give that up in exchange for this news! Amen! :) |

I am so sorry to hear about her eye!!! That is so sad for her showing career. Please post any updates. |
Thank you for your concern but not to worry. Penny is doing fine. I could probably have shown her this weekend if it weren't that she is not to bathed for another week until the eye is completly healed. She is showing no signs of pain whatsoever. Bun and I are off to the toy dog classic in a minute (he'll do just one day of agility this time) and on Monday an earthdog trial. Penny gets to sit this one out at have Bon Bons on the sofa with mom and dad this weekend. ;) |
Great news about Penny. Bet she will enjoy her day on the sofa with all the attention from your parents. Good luck with Bun this weekend. |
I am so glad to hear that Penny is doing well . |
