Scary!!!!!!! I was walking Chewy to the car after work, and this big dog starting walking slowly up to us. I scooped Chewy up in my arms, and the dog growled, showed his teeth and started charging at me. There was a guy there (not the owner), that saw what was going on and he yelled at the dog and started going towards it so the dog turned away. Anyway, really got my heart going!! Has this happened to anyone else? I always pick up Chewy when there is a big dog that I am not familiar with, but do you guys have any other suggestions to prevent something like this in the future? |
That is really scarey! You don't know who the dog belonged to? Hopefully it was a one time thing where the dog was let out accidentally and wont happen again. I'd probably be very leary to take a walk again until I knew for sure though. |
Carry a big stick with you and beat the heck out of it if it even thinks about attacking. I have one of those big black heavy flashlights that I carry with me. Maybe that or bring some mace along with you. |
Not personally; but, have read many similar stories here where large dogs have actually attacked smaller breeds and their owners. Not sure why, unless they think they're a toy, or a rodent?? One poor lady reported that she was in her FENCED yard, when a large dog jumped the fence and attacked her with the Yorkie in her arms!! I always pick Abigail up if there's another dog in the area that I can see. Things can happen quicker than we might be able to react. |
Small dogs have been snatched from their owners' arms before. Not frequently but it does happen. If the big dog starts getting near you I would suggest lifting the dog up above your head with both arms assuming you don't have a wiggle-worm. That's what my parents do with their maltese. It is very scary. |
Never happened to me but my grandmother (who lives in a very nice neighborhood) was walking her two Pekingese and a large dog, who was unleashed, growled and then tried to jump on them. She instinctively dropped to the ground and hovered over them and she was the one who got bit and scratched. But who knows if the doggies would have made it through the attack without her. It is very scary...keep your baby close!! :p |
I carry some mace with me when I walk mine because Our neiighborhood has some big dogs that roam |
I have had several expereiences with my last Yorkie Gracie and Maya my Pom. Once I was walking Gracie and due to vans in this persons driveway I couldn't see his Golden Retriever. The owner was taking in his garbage can. All od a sudden this GR is there and has Gracie 6 lbs in his mouth. I am screaming and the dumb owner just stands there saying come here what ever the dogs name was and never tried to get his dog. Fortunatley I don't think the dog was mean as he didnt hurt her just scared us to death. What really got me mad was about a month later the neighbor, lived a block away, is walking his dog with his wife and a friend and I was out with Gracie on a leash of course, and he says loudly, there's that lady and dog , whateber his dogs name was scared the s**t out of. I didnt say anything but I sure would now. I had 2 other similar episodes. Very scary. I also pick mine up whenever I see a large dog |
I always go for walks with my husband. Never alone. That way, one of us can take the babies and the other (my husband) can deal with the bigger dog. He's so neat to have around! I know he'd lay his life down for me and our babies! :D |

It happened when we were trick or treating, the dog looked like a fox mix, it was very pretty, but when we walked by it was hooked up to a leash around a basketball hoop, and it somehow came undone and he went right for Rocky. I got him up in time but the dog was growling at him, then the owner came out and got him, and seemed pretty rude about the whole ordeal. |
i know this happens alot to Gizmo and I.. mase... good idea..... I was thinking about carrying some type of treat ..so that way if a dog is charging towards me I can wave the treat and throw it in the opposite direction and run like heck... |
that is horrifying. I think Valentino went pee pee while reading this:animal-pa |
