How to stope her from licking her stiched area? Lilo is still having her stiches in (from getting spayed) until monday. Last night she was running around a lot, and I think thats why she was in pain yesterday before bed time, but by the morning the redness and swelling went away, so I didn't think that I'll have to take her to the vet today.I came back home today from work and her stiched area is swollen and a little bit red . it seems like she licked on it a lot, while I was at work. What can I make her to do to stop this! She is in a lot of pain right now, and she is crying a lot. Should I take her to the hospital or just watch her and first thing in the morning is to go to petco and get this plastic cone to put on her neck? |
go to walmart and get an 3 pack of infant onsies. This will only work if you are home all day because you need to undo the snaps for her to go pee. Layla was under 3 lbs when she was spayed and fit into premie.. she is now 4 lbs and wears 0-3 months as pj's in the summer... it is SO much more comfie than that silly cone. |
i think i would call the vet and ask if you should bring her in to have a look at the stitches. if she has been running around a lot it could be she has started developing an infection. I used the onsies one mine but I was with them all day. I am not sure how safe they would be wearing one while home alone. If they go potty while you are gone it would certainly not be good for them to be laying in a wet onsie. might be a good idea to cage her while you are at work. I hope she gets better soon. give her kisses and hugs from us. |
I don't know why she even has stitches. :( They can do it differently now so that there aren't any stitches there to bother them. That's how my Vet did Sassy's spay. Of course, she has a stitch in each leg from her dew claw removal which she tries to lick incessantly, but none on the outside from her spaying. Hope she feels better soon. I know just how it feels when they are crying like that and you can't do anything to help them. Poor you. My heart goes out to you. |
did they give you anything for the pain? |
Thanks to everyone! I think that she cries BC she feels so miserable!:( She is sleeping right now next to me, so I'll be just watching her tonight and if the redness and swelling wont go away till the morning , I'm taking her to the vet. I'm just so scared that she can get infection or something. |

Definitely take her to the vet if the stitches look inflamed or irritated. You can also get an E-collar from them. Furbabies don't particularly like them, but they keep them away from the stitches! Especially if you're not there to watch them during the day. You can also buy some Bitter Apple Spray...it's safe to spray on stitched areas. Fair warning...not all dogs find it yucky! Luckily ours did. Between the Onesies & Bitter Apple Spray, we avoided the E-Collar. CJ & Muffin |
You can rub a bit of bitter apple just next to the incision line but not on it. You can also ask the vet for an Elizabethan collar. |
my vet gives you an option if you want pain meds or not. I always chose the meds to take home with me. I didn't have to give it very many times. you might check into giving a baby aspirin. be careful to give the right dosage tho. i will do a search and see what i can find for you. |

My Vet told me Infant Tylenol. My Sassy is 3.5 pounds and her dosage was just two drops. Every 4-6 hours as needed. |
I put a loose swater around her waist so she won't be able to lick on it. I've been home for 3 hours now and it seems like the swelling and redness went away. Thanks for all your advices. I have to figure out what to do to keep her away from licking on it for tommorow. |
if you put bitter apple on it ...it might sting.. you could try putting a solid deodorant around the area. (not on it but around it). i put that on ahia's foot when she was chewing on a nail. works for us. you might give it a try. they hate the taste of it and will leave it alone. |
