It has been VERY cold here in Ohio (10-15 below 0), as well as 18 inches of snow!! Lexie goes out in her winter coat to go potty and then runs right back in the house. They are a lot hardier than you would think. Last year I was a nervous wreck about her being outside in the cold and snow. This year ,since she is trained to go potty outside, we have had to deal with the weather. I stand out with her sometimes, and sometimes just inside the door. As soon as she is done, we run back inside. She is only 5 lbs, but does great!! She seems to mind the rain and wind worse than the snow and cold, believe it or not!! |
Footwear For Yorkies It is a good idea to get some decent water proof booties for our furbabies for the cold winter. The snow can cause frostbite easily plus protect the feet from salt on the roadways. I got these awesome booties (from ebay) for my baby. They actually fit (first ones) and she walks and runs in them. I also got her a pair of open toed sandels for the summer time to protect her feet from the hot pavement and sand when we go to the beach. I made her a pair of booties also with leather soles (not waterproof) and lining so when we are gardening she wont get prickles and when walking in the park, her feet safe from spear grass. All of her footwear stays on by way of velcro. They don't come off! |

She will not go potty inside no matter what! My question is that if your dogs remain indoors from October to April, how do you get them to go potty while inside? Some have suggested to put paper down for her and I have and it doesn't work. First off I wouldnt suggest keeping your dogs in for months on end... they really do need to get out and see things besides the four walls inside their home.. if its really cold take them to a local store that allows pets and walk around a little, if possible... bundle them up and take them outside. However, many people wee wee pad train their dogs and therefore they never need to go outside to go to the bathroom. If your dog is already trained to go outside, when you take him out try putting a paper down and getting him to go on it... if you cant when you goes, use the pad to pick up a little of the pee so that the pad smells like it... then next time he has to go put him in an ex pen with his paper on one side and his bed on the other... this will encourage him to leave his bed and go to the paper to go "potty". It may take awhile... many dogs who are trained to go outside have a hard time picking up the paper as they feel like they are going against their training and going inside... hopefully others will have more advice as well. Jackson is a bigger boy but all winter, I would just bundle him up in his warm coat, and we'd go outside as much as possible. He loved romping around in the snow. My friend's got two little ones though and her girl, Nala is around 5-6lbs and loved the cold and would last a while! Just dress them accordingly :) |
Extreme Weather & Potty Time Thank you for your response(s). My girl loves to play in the snow also. Oh she will go outside to potty no matter what conditions but people, family tell me to make her go on paper inside when there is a storm out and she needs to go. I feel to teach her to go on paper (pee pad) is going backwards since she is house trained (to go outside). I will consider if we want to have her go indoors or not during extreme weather conditions. If so, I will definitely try this suggestion. As it is, Roxy goes outside for a walk at least four times a day and has a big front and back yard to play in (supervised) as well. Cold weather makes me so sad :( Being 3 pounds its really hard to do cold weather. I will bundle Lula up but she will just sit and look at me... crying. All summer we mastered potty training then winter hit and I am going backwards trying to now train her to use potty pads. Winter has been tough on both of us. |
In Mich, Pixie goes out in all kinds of weather. It doesn't bother her one bit. She doesn't even wear a coat. Just out and in very quickly in the winter months. With the weather we are have now she is out for longer periods of time. |

She still went out. Sometimes not for long but she went. It was cold though. I went down early in the morning and borrowed a shovel (I live in an apartment) and shoveled an area for the small dogs in the bldg to use. Later I just shoved snow aside with my boot so she had a clear area to do her thing as the shoveled area got rather busy after a day and didn't want her there after that. We work it out. It is just that sometimes I think that she needs to go number two and well, if it is miserable out, she will quickly fo tinkle but then run for the door, meanwhile.. It's like, hey Roxy ..
