Is a Yorkie for me? Hi there! I'm obviously new. :D My boyfriend and I are considering buying a Yorkie sometime this year, after we get into a house. He has wanted a Yorkie for a long time now! I'm more of a big dog gal myself, but I don't mind letting him have one. I certainly wouldn't love it any less for it's size, especially since I'm short myself! ;) The thing is, we have three cats. Would a Yorkie be ok around them? (as in, would a puppy be ok?) One of my cats is a 17lb silver spotted bengal. He is pretty gentle, but he can be a little rough when he plays. I'm sure the other two will mostly ignore the puppy unless it got within hissing range. :p I work from home, so I would definately be able to keep an eye on the little guy/gal, so no worries there. I would love any opinions, information, advice or whatnot! Thanks! :) |
I have 2 cats and 2 yorkies they do fine we have had our moments though but as long as you keep and eye on them they should be fine. BTW welcome to YT! |
:wavey: :welcome4: I don't have cats so I don't have much advice to offer, but I just wanted to mention that if you are worried about it, you could consider getting a bigger yorkie rather than a tiny. They come in many different sizes as you will see here. I have a 11.5 pound guy and he would definately be able to play with a 17 pound cat. I might be worried to have a 2 pounder play with a 17 pound cat though. Just something else to consider. Hope you like it here! |
If it helps, one of my cats is only 6lbs, and she gets along fine with the 17lb cat. :) I guess I'm worried about kitty nails swatting little puppy faces - ouch! I'll be sure to keep them trimmed. |
We have a 9 lb part himalayan who is female and a real *itch if you can say that about a cat. But Yorkies are very very smart and our little furbaby is really good at dodging. She's only 5 months, but she knows exactly how far to push the kitty before she has to hide behind something. The cat is the dominant one so far. Puppy won't go near her food if kitty goes for it, so we have to play referee when there is food involved, otherwise our little Yorkie pup would never get to eat. The cat sees us playing with the puppy and will put herself between the puppy and the toy just to interfere because she's jealous, so puppy won't try to get a toy that the cat is coveting. We also have to intervene and put the kitty elsewhere if we want to toss a ball or something the cat wants to do. But since you work from home, you probably won't need to worry about anyone getting hurt. You'll be there to keep them in line. |
I didn't mean to imply that a small yorkie (or tiny) can't get along well with a bigger cat. I know know that alot of memebers here have big dogs and they get along great with their yorkies. You know your cat best, so if you think it'll get along with a dog then I'm sure it will. I just wanted to point out that yorkies come in many different sizes so you do have options. I also want to get cats in the future. :p I hope everything works out well for you. |
Thanks guys! Yes, my boy (the bengal) is a sweety, really. He just likes to try pouncing on the other two cats to play, and I don't know if he'd understand he'd need to be gentle with a puppy. I think he'd figure it out though. He'd BETTER, haha!! :) Now we just need to find a reputable breeder, etc. Woo! It took us forever to find a bengal breeder we were happy with. |
Hi! As long as you feel you are willing to put the time into housebreaking, which can be very difficult with these little one's, and you are willing to spend the play time and walk time that they require I don't see why not. They are terriers and not lap dogs in general and require much more entertainment and exercise than the general public sometimes understands. |

LOL!! How did your cat react to the three puppies?! I can see mine, now... *insert tiny yapping puppy* Three pairs of huge eyes suddenly appear, and that's all you see of the cats for the rest of the day. :P |
I would be very careful! We have a cat that ATTACKS Diesel. We got them around the same time and so they have grown up together. The played very well together as babies. As our cat got older he began attacking Diesel. Needless to say somehting had to give. After the cat was fixed we put him out. Now he comes in and out and has mellowed some but not a lot. I still have to watch Diesel outside because of the cat. He will still attack him if given the chance. I would be VERY careful! All cats are different so who know yours may do just fine. Good Luck. |
I have a cat that we have had for 14 years and I have two yorkies that I brought in as pups two years ago. The cat doesnt play with Chachi and Jewels but they are able to cohabitate in the same house okay |

He use to beg to go out even after he was fixed.I don't regret putting him out becuase he had started to become destructive. Doggy sit for a few days. Maybe you could find a friend that will let you borrow their dog for a few days. Make sure the dog is already familiar with cats. This may give you an idea of how it will go down before you go spend a bunch of money on a pup and find yourself in a bad situation. |
I don't really know a lot of friends with dogs. The ones I do know have two huge golden retrievers which would terrify my cats (lol), the other has an extremely skittish little dog, and my parents have a very old cocker spaniel that wouldn't do well on a two hour trip to where I live... poor thing is completely blind. :( It is a good suggestion though, so thank you for it. :) I'm really not worried though. I plan on bringing a puppy in, so the cats should do well around something smaller than they are. They'll just do the usual hissy run away jealous kitty thing, and get over it in a week or so. I don't think it would be that bad of a situation. I guess my main concern is a yorkie being happy around cats in general, but from what I've read, the pup should be fine. :) |

Well, one more comment about my cat and our Yorkie. I thought that they would get along better before we got our puppy frankly. The cat usually hides from anyone or anything new. And the first few days she did hide. But after about a week, she got gutsier and came out of hiding. Then the fun began. The puppy wanted to play and challenges the cat all the time, barking in her face and nipping at her heels. So now the cat retaliates by waiting until the dog isn't prepared and tries to swat the puppy whenever we're not looking. She'll hiss at her and then for no apparent reason go after her. So we have to be on our guard to make sure puppy doesn't get sliced and diced. The cat is an inside/outside cat, so she has sharp claws unless I have just cut them. So be prepared. There may be more fireworks than you think. But again, you'll be there, so you can referee. |
:welcome4: YT, I HAVE TWO 13 YEAR OLD CATS, THEY ARE BIG TOO (22LB) AND I WAS WORRIED WITH PHEOBE AT FIRST I KEEP THEM SEPARATE, AND LITTLE BY LITTLE I INTRUDUCE THE CATS, NOW THEY ARE FINE MY FEMALE CAT MINDY SHE TOLERATE HER, BUT DON'T WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH PHEOBE, MY MALE CAT PLAY WITH HER (SOMETIMES) AND THEY GET ALONG BETTER, I ALWAYS KEEP MY EYES ON THEM, MY CATS ALWAYS HAVE THE NAIL TRIM AND A BATH WHEN THEY NEED IT.:cat: :woof: |
