Volunteer At Hospital Are any of your dogs healing dogs? I want to do this, but do not know where to call or how to begin. Any suggestions? |
I know that a nursing home that I did nursing clinicals in 10 years ago had dogs and cats. The residents loved them. Maybe you could call around and find out. Most long term care facilities welcome any volunteer contact. Some of those residents never recieve visitors. |
I am SO interested in doing this! tootie loves everyone and is very gentle... I am hoping to get him started in this.... I hope someone hass good info on this... |
Bump. Anyone with suggestions? |
Here is a good site to become a therapy dog. http://www.tdi-dog.org/whatdo.html |
Hope This Helps! When you say "healing dog", I think you mean therapy dog? If so, here is a link that may point you in the right direction: http://www.tdi-dog.org/whatdo.html , this is the web site for Therapy Dog International, INC. Therapy dogs are not to be confused with "service dogs"; for example a dog used by a blind person for navigation, or a dog that helps someone who is paralyzed and immobile. A therapy dog and their handler provide comfort and companionship to people in nursing homes, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and institutions. They enrich the lives of not only patients, but, their caregivers, too. I hope to use my 3 year old Golden Retriever in therapy work in a year or two. Goldens tend to have long puppyhoods, and right now her interests lie more in how many frisbees she can catch in a day, than being calm enough for therapy work! Good luck with your efforts, and let me know if you need anymore info. I'd be happy to help. |
That is what I meant. Thanks. I will look at this site. |
After reading the test requirements I realized Rosie would definetly fail.:( |
Even if Rosie didn't become a Therapy Dog, she could still spread a lot of sunshine at nursing homes or assisted living centers, as Genie suggested. My parents live in an assisted living center & when we take Muffin there, it's an event! They all love her & can't wait for her to come. When she had 2 surgeries in December & January, my parents had to keep everybody posted on how she was doing &, most importantly, when she'd be coming back! It makes the residents so happy, Muffin loves all the attention & I feel like I'm doing something to cheer people who often don't get visitors. I think that's therapy...for all of us! :) CJ & Muffin |
That's an idea. Maybe I will call around. |
What I do is kinda sorta "unofficial", but I have a nursing home that my miniature horse visits...The residents are always very happy to see Quincy walking down the halls and he is always ever so careful with walkers and wheelchairs and our precious fragile elders. You might want to call around and see if you can just come for an "unofficial" visit so that you can see how your baby will react to all of the excitement she will cause :) |
