Why Don't Yorkies Win Dogshows? Pookie, Boo Boo and I love to watch all the dogshows on TV, but we wonder why the yorkies always do so poorly compared to other breeds. Not only don't they win best in show, I've never seen them win best in group or even make the first cut. I don't think it's just because yorkies are small, since I've seen pugs, toy poodles, papillions and Chinese cresteds walk away with all the trophies. Why do you think yorkies don't win dogshows? |
i think that all the time. I watch them on TV almost every weekend & Yorkies never even place! I don't get it! |
it's a conspiracy - they're all just jealous!! ;) |
I watched a program on TV recently about dog shows and how political they've become. Owners were lobbying for their breeds, and it didn't seem seem like an entirely fair process. |
This is the reason dog shows do not interest me @ all...They seem so political....also if you notice it seems like the same breeders are always there. I'm not bitter or anything about it, but it just seems like a very political thing. My 2 Cents, Michael |
Five years ago, long before Pookie and Boo Boo entered my life, my husband and I went to a dogshow in San Francisco. There were hundreds of dogs in the contest, but not a single yorkie was entered. Don't you think that's strange? |
shows They do win Best in Show..groups etc...there are hundreds of shows and you would have to see all the wins...in the Yorkshire Terrier mag they list all the stats in the ring for Yorks. Go to INFODog.com and see wins from all over the country. Top bitch, "Claire" (Biss CH. Exmoor's I D' Claire at Jo-Nel) has many groups wins. Ava Tyree's CH Wyatt has 5 group ONE and about 20 other group placing wins.. Parkside's Ch. Piano Man is has a BIS.. too many others to name.. My Charlotte's sire is a BIS..and BISS..Best In Specialty Show winner. |
Winners If you see no enteries for a popular breed like a Yorkie, they were probably have a specialty show at the same time..very common. |
I admit I am so niave as to dog showing... I heard some very distrubing news which makes me think why even show if they have to cheat to win. THEY DYE the dogs hair also use eyeliner around their eyes to enchance. Some say they just touch up "a not uniform coat" others DYE the entire coat. IMHO why bother to compete if you have to cheat its not a real win!!!! |
Yorkshire Terriers often wins at dogshows . I showed Kellie and one of my friend was showing her Yorkie named Cody . This little boy went Best In Show at the Sudbury dogshow . I was very happy for my friend . |
dog showing People do cheat, some do anything to win...but cheaters are a small part of the ones who win. Using a bluing shampoo on a Yorkie, coat products, flat iron, or a white powder to cover yellow on a maltese etc. is not cheating in my eyes...ever seen Oprah without her make-up? Grooming enhancments are a common thing. Tatooing a pink spot on the nose coat dying, or braces for teeth is very different. I used to get tried of seeing alot of the same people winning..but then it dawned on me..they had the best Yorkies and earned the wins...it is political to some degree..but a novice with a really good dog can win too. My friend, Lauire took her first show male and made him number one..first time she ever showed a dog...no ring experince..learned as she showed. |
Yorkie Wins! I read the Yorkshire Terrier Magazine every other month, and they show all of the wins, but I agree, I would like to see a champion win at Westminster or the Eukanuba show. Does anyone know the story about the Yorkie who was sold as a pet, inbred, who turned out to win Best in Show at Westminster? What year was that? and, when was the last time a Yorkie won there? |
If I am not mistaken , the only Best In Show Yorkie in Westminster was : Ch Ce De Higgens in 1978 , he was owned by Mrs Switzer |
Higgins 1978 was the first and last time at Westminster. |

Took the words right out of my mouth! ;) |
Yorkie Specialty Show I am so excited! I've met a few Southern California Show Breeders recently and they have invited me to the Yorkie Specialty show in Pomona next Thursday! There will be over 90 yorkies being shown and many champions from some puppies I am considering. I am so excited. They told me I better leave my wallet at home. I can believe it with all the vendors I will see! Is anyone else going? |
I think it mightbe if their coat isn't perfect or something but i think they are the prettiest dogs out there. |

My baby girl, Tyava's Out of Oz, Toto, is Wyatt's daughter. He won Best of Breed at both the Nationals in Tampa and Westminster in New York and competed in the finals. He comes from a long line of champions ... his grandfather was Canadian Champion Pastoral Johnny Handsome. Wyatt wins shows all the time ... travels with his handler, Kirstin MacGregor. While Ava has raised lots of champions, most important to me is that she breeds for quality and our little Toto is just perfect! Although I am sure that winning in competition is important and thrilling, I believe that breeders such as yourself and Ava should be very proud of your breeding skills and the quality that your lines produce!! ;) |

They do quite well here in Uk Crufts 2005 |
I watched the Eukanuba show last weekend (or was it the weekend before...can't remember now!) just to see a Yorkie, and I was soooooooo upset when it broke for commercial, came back to a list of dogs that we missed during the break, & there was the Yorkie. Bummer!! I've never really watched a dog show before, but was totally intrigued by the different ways the dogs move. Some are so sleak & graceful, and others just clunk along...and everything in between. I also thought the agility was amazing! Didn't get to see a Yorkie there, either, but I was awestruck by the one I did see. YorkieRose, I'd love to see you show!! |

The best way to appreciate a dogshow is to be at the place it is held . I really get hooked on them the first time I went to see one . The last time Kellie was shown , it was at Montreal , the entry for Yorkshire Terrier was 16 . It was very exciting . |

Her grand father is Ch Elite Loving Touch , a Johnny's son . My best friend have a little boy of Braecliff who have Ch Tyava Billy Bad To The Bone . The world is very small , don't you think . |
Johnny Johnny Handsome died and there was a lovely tribute to him in the magazine. I love Tyava Yorkies...Dr. Detroit was in full coat when I saw him at an old age..still looked pefect. Toto has her fathers good looks too. I had to go look at a couple peds... Claire, Clemmie are from my Braecliff stud who is out of Billy and then DR Detroit..now that I think about it I have 2 more girls from these males I co-own. |
Yes , I have heard about Johnny's death . I have had the chance to see him at a few dogshows . He was superb . I know some of Lorraine's yorkies . Tyava yorkies are superb . I often go to U.S.A. I think I plan my weekends around dogshows . I really love to talk to breeders and learn , learn and learn . |
YorkieRose ... Thank you! We are kinda proud of our Toto ... her personality is so precious, much like a child ... we find it difficult not to spoil her! The tributes to Johnny in the Yorkshire Terrier Magazine were really interesting ... he shows up in lots of bloodlines. And, Billy Bad to the Bone, I have to smile every time I think about him! That little man really got around!! I have found him showing up in lots & lots of pedigrees! You have some beautiful Yorkies and your method reminds me so much of Ava. She puts so much time and energy into her babies but she always has time to keep up with Toto's life and offer suggestions/advice. ;) Olivier ... it is indeed a small world! Luk Tan's little Cha-Cha [who lives in Thailand] is also a great granddaughter of Pastoral Johnny Handsome!! I love researching pedigrees now that I recognize so many of the different kennels & breeders ... I find them very interesting. Tell Kellie that her little "relative" Toto sends her "puppy smoochies"!! ;) |
