Before this site, I never knew that...
 
There were different types of yorkie hair...cottony and silky. Is it possible to tell the difference when they are very young? 8-10 weeks or so? It was also really interesting to learn that their eye color, when taking a photo, can indicate whether they will be one type or the other. I have looked at so many of the beautiful yorkies on this site and noticed that some have a more 'delicate' look around the face...when the hair looks like tendrils. Are these all silky coats? I would love to see one of each type, side-by-side to compare. Do those with a seemingly larger head/face have the cottony hair? I have been taking photos of Betty for the last few days, trying to see what color her eyes shined...and couldn't get a good result. However, by looking at her, I felt like I had a little cotton baby! But, I never had a problem with her hair matting at all. Last night, while taking her picture, I got a little hint of red! Hahaha. I thought so!

I never knew that myself either until I found this site. I love all of the coats especially the ones with poofy, teddy-bear like hair :) (I believe they are cottony coats).......

My boy is a silky coat.........very fine, thin, yet glossy and never matts. Now, if only we could have the best of all the coat types :D

He is still a pup but this might give you an idea of a silky coat ;)

Oh jessy, he has beautiful hair!!! I love the contrast in his coloring around his neck/head. he is very very pretty :) er..I mean, handsome ;)

so, what are the guidelines for the eyes? maggies always flash blue???? I think...let me check....no, looks more like green.

ok, i just found my answer
blue/green=silky
red/yellow=cottony

hmmm that is very interesting. I wonder what one has to do with the other. weird...

Don't quote me on this one.......BUT, If I remember well, blue/green = silky coat. Red = cottony coat.............but again, please don't quote me :p

hehe, jessy, I looked it up in the search and that is what I found too :) yes, your boy, he is so pretty. i LOVE the coloring on his head. I am thinking maybe maggie will have that coloring. she is very VERY light on her legs and belly and the hair on her head is showing some blonde through the silver and black. I know she will be beautiful no matter what...but you know, you can't help but be curious as to how they will turn out :)

I have to say, I am shocked to hear that maggie would have silky coat. i guess maybe i am not fully aware of the differences but her hair seems very cottony to me. it matts really easily, very hard to brush, and seems so coarse. but it is still puppy hair. actually, the hair on her legs was cut short and the hair growing in there does seem kinda silky. i am just shoked :) and curious.

Hannah's coat has always been frizzy, but I think that is her puppy coat because the hair growing in is silky. Her eyes flash green too. Here is a pic of her.

oh, genie, she is cute!!d yeah, maggie has that same kind of coat.

here is a pic of maggie. it's hard to find a good one of her coat cuz she doesn't go without clothes on too often :)

oh, thank you so much. I like to think she is pretty cute :) I always wanted a girl. I came very close to getting a boy cuz i wanted a yorkie so bad and could never find girls. then along came maggie...a dream come true :) i had her name picked out for about 5 years...I'm glad it fits her LOL

when you hit "reply" there is a button toward the middle/bottom of the page that says Manage Attachments. click that and a pop-up window opens up. that is where you will load your pictures. hit attach..and there it is :)

Cali has a more cottany thick matts easy coat and her eyes flash Red. Pixie has a silky coat and her eyes flash red. Cali is the bigger one

okay I don't know if I believe the color of the eyes thing because babybear's eyes always flash green and his coat is cottony. It mats easily on the chest but the back i can brush out just fine and his legs are silky. Hmmm maybe he is a little of both.lol I just find that his back is curly almost and when I brush him out he kind of turns to a puff ball.lol I can get it to lay down sometimes when i spray him a little. I am wondering if his is off do to his surgery and him going through everything with his neck. So for now I will call him a half and half yorkie.lol Oh and he is 2 years old so he should have his adult coat by now. lol

The eye flash thing isn't a steadfast rule - there are exceptions. There will be silky coats who have a red eye flash and cotton coats that have green eye flash. I also didn't realize this till I started searching through these threads. There are some great links out there that go into the scientific reasoning behind the eye thing. I'll see if I can find them.

I can't get over how beautiful Lola is. everytime I see your avatar I am just in awe. There are some amazingly beautiful dogs on this forum!!

Thank you! :D Of course, those pics were both taken right after a bath...you should see her after she's been running around playing for a while. She's a bit of a dirty tomboy. ;)
