Age of puppy How old do breeders usually let puppies go? Someone i know just got a yorkie that is 7 weeks old, are there any additional precautions this person should look for? |
8 to 12wks and sometimes older. |
For a yorkie, I would say 10 to 12 weeks is the earliest, 16 weeks if they are exceptionally small. They really need the socialization of their mother and their siblings. Without that they can develop some odd behaviors. The mother dog teaches the puppies lots of things even after they are weaned. They also learn how to get along with other dogs by their interactio with their litter mates and their mother. The longer the breeder has the puppy the longer she has to be concerned about health and shots and feeding also. Yorkies are so susceptible to so many health issues as oung puppies that the later you can get them the better in my opinion. I did not get my last puppy until she was almost 15 weeks and I was so glad. She was also further along with her potty training. |
My puppies go to their new home at 12 to 16 weeks old , if he or she is very small than it is much later . 7 weeks old is very young . |
i heard the AKC reccomends that 12 wks is the best age because that's when they can tell if the puppy has any problems. |
I got Maggie when she was about 12 weeks old...weighing just a hair under two pounds, but sturdy and healthy as anything. Molly, who only recently joined our family was very near 5 months old when she came to us (at 2 pounds 2 ounces). A good part of the delay with Molly was the breeder trying to determine whether she was ever going to grow large enough to show. (She has a BEAUTIFUL face, which was a good part of why her breeder was holding on to her.) Once she decided she was probably going to remain a "fidget", she agreed to sell her to me. I know that my breeder said she keeps most of her little ones between 12 and 16 weeks...just to make sure they are pretty well over the blood sugar fluctuations that can happen with these little ones. |
