The vet said something about Sherbet My wife took our adrian to the vet and he said among other thing to give our dog sherbet ice cream she is 5 months old and had some blood in her urine and he said it was related to a stress on her kidneys or something like that. Why give sherbet? Is it ok? |
I can't imagine why a Vet. would say to give the dog sherbet. Never in my --years have I heard this. Did your wife ask the Vet. what the sherbet is supposed to do? I'd heat it up and let it lap it. That stuff is really too cold to feed to a puppy or even an older dog in the frozen state. |
I've never heard this either but was interested about it and did a search. I can't find anything on dogs, kidneys and sherbet but you can find it about humans. It has to do with Phosphorus and Calcium. When you have kidney problems you need to keep Phosphorus low but the body has a problem getting the needed calcium and can draw it from your bones. Sherbet is low in Phosphorus but has Calcium. I could be completely off on this though. Look it up and see what you think and ask your vet about it again. |
did the vet check Adrian for bladder stones? Blood in the urine is one of the symptoms and yorkies are prone to them. They're diagnosed on xray and have to be removed surgically. Usually the dog will be prescibed a special dog food (low protein) for the rest of its life so the stones don't come back. |
I would keep it in the fridge so that its kinda soft & not so cold. I'm funny about microwaves because I read a article that the USA actually put a gag order on the effects microwaving food has on the body & that russia out lawed them in 1976! because of a study done-its pretty crazy. Anyways, that is why puppy pad training is good if they used the yard you may not notice anything until its to late. I cant see giving to much sherbert, its so sweet I cant eat much myself. Keep us posted & dont be afraid to research & get a second opinion/more tests ran. |
I have never heard that its interesting |

Toy dogs in general are prone to them, and you are right kaymo, if you have one prone to them low protein diet is recommended from what I've gathered. However I can't imagine why "sherbert" icecream. Kinda makes you wonder though because on the flip side alot of people, myself included give cheese once in a while as a treat. My pregnant dams have all tolerated cottage cheese and yogurt well in the past. I can't say if "sherbert" is good or bad and am just making an observation here. I know "some" dogs are highly lactose intolerent. |

:animal36 Both of mine have no problem with cold. We used to give the ice cream cones from McDonalds. From what I am being told now dogs are not very dairy friendly and this is the reason for the Sherbet. It is along the lines of what was said earlier about the calcium and the kidneys. Happily the blood spotting is gone. We are now just waiting on that first heat. (that's what I thought that this was) I am just glad that she is ok.:) :) :aimeeyork |
