All kibbles give my two the runs...why? Ok there is something that I must be doing wrong.I really want to leave kibble down in Cookie's and Mimi's bowls all day. My problem is so far all the kibble that Ihave tried gives them the runs! They hated Science Diet, tried the Chicken Soup kibble,Royal Canin,Eukanuba and like three other brands that I dont remember right now. They ate the Royal Canin pretty good but after the second day I noticed their poop kept getting more and more runny. Then I switched them back to wet food and by the second day their poop was firm again.I've tried this several times and the same thing happens over and over.I bought them the canned food of Chicken Soup and that gave both of them the runs and they only ate very little of it anyway. The only canned food that they will eat it all on their own is the Eukanuba or Ceasar canned food. I know those two are not the best choice or quality. That is the only wet food that they will eat. Cookie is too small for me to "wait until he gets really hungry" Mimi is still small for her age so she eats 3-4 times a day almost everyday. Cookie eats the same . I've tried mixing in the kibble and they eat it ok,the same thing happens still. It got so bad once that I had to call the vet to give me something that would stop the diarreah. Well itwas like $10 and the drops worked almost immediately! I had to steam/shampoo the rug. Anyone know why this is happening? Genie |
My vet told me to mix in some (1 tsp) of rice with the royal canin (just what I feed maximus..could be any kibble you like) and it will take care of the runny stools...do this for about a week at every feeding and then you can gradually decrease next week 1/2 and by 3rd week there systems should be used to the dry food...it worked for me...but purely suggestion some vets dont like giving what they call "table" food |
Sounds like the problem we had with our retriever cross Mollie and that turned out to be an allergy to wheat. Once we changed to potato based foods she has been fine. |
Oreo & Ginger had the runs after they tried Artemis Osopure & California Natural. I switched them both On Innova Puppy Dry and they are doing Great! :p |
Are you switching foods slowly? It is best to take at least 7 days to make the switch by adding the new food in with the normal food adding more and more of it until at about a week they are eating just the new food. Sometimes during the switch if it happens too quickly they will get runny stools. Here is a a good switch over schedule (ratio of new to old food) Day 1: 1:5 new to old food Day 2: 2:4 new to old food Day 3: 3:3 new to old food (half and half) Day 4: 4:2 new to old food Day 5: 5:1 new to old food Day 6: all new food |
Ive switched foods slowly but I will try what you did exactly. I am spending around $55-$60 a month for a bunch of these Cesar foods! That's another think that is killing me! I know they need to be on Kibble by now so I will try anything as long as they dont get sick :( Genie |

Biddy will only eat Cesars - won't even sniff at another brand! |
I'm with Breeze Switching the food frequently, or too quickly reaks serious HAVOC on the GI system. Even too many bones in conjunction with the regular food will cause upset. Their little tummies are sensitive. I would try a food and give it at least two weeks for their bodies to adjust. Also, they may be allergic, or sensitive so try and find one with salmon as the main product instead of beef, lamb, or chicken. I know Purina ONE makes one for sensitive stomachs that is dominantly Salmon. Good luck. Till then, maybe keep them on tile or outside till the food is expelled. |
Cookie, I went through the same thing with Maggie. I was getting scared. Finally we got her diet straightened out. She eats Purina Pro Plan Small Breed Puppy Dry Food and Ceasars Puppy Food. She is only 12 weeks old, so she eats four times a day. Her meals are 1TBLS. Pro Plan (softened with a tiny amount of water) and 1/4 container of Ceasar's puppy food. She loves it and her poo is perfect. I must need a vacation when I refer to poo as perfect. If you go this route, don't foget to get the Pro Plan SMALL BREED. Pro Plan makes a general puppy food, but the SMALL BREED formula is for the little one. |
Im so sorry that your babies are having so much trouble finding the rite kibble. I heard Innova is good for pups with allergies. Also dont change the food too often, you need to do i t slowly. Have you talk to your vet regarding this problem? If you mix rice with the kibble that can help their tummies. Good luck. |
